August 24, 1964
A regular meeting of the Board of Public Safety was held on Monday,
August 24, 1964 at 10:00 A.M. All members were present. Minutes of
the last regular meeting were read and approved. No vouchers were
approved for payment.
BUILDING DEPARTMENT: HOUSE MOVE (HILDRETH TO 30T-H )
Comes now Forrest R. West, Building Commissioner, anal requests permission
to move a house from 1717 Hildreth Street to 1226 S. 30th Street. The
owner of the house is John Gardner and the mover is Irv. Warden.
Mr. West advised the Board that notification had been sent to all
persons who are interested parties and that the house meets the necessary
qualifications of Codes pertaining to house moves.
There being no remonstrators present and no written remonstrances having
been received, the Board approved the house move in accordance with
the terms of the request.
SUB -STANDARD DIVISION ( HEARINGS_ )
Comes now Joseph Ettl, attorney for Mr.and"Mrs. Blad, owners of property
located at 715 S. Meade Street. Mr. and Mrs. Blad had been directed to
appear to inform the Board whether they would repair the dwelling or
have it demolished.
Mr. Ettl advised the Board that, due to illness, Mr. Blad had been
unable to accomplish the repairs necessary or to find a buyer. He
requested a continuance to allow time to determine whether the house
could be sold.
After hearing Mr. Ettl, the Board granted a continuance of two weeks.
With reference to property owned by Roland Grant, located at 1629
Linden Avenue, the Board was advised by the Clerk of the Board that
a letter had been sent to Mr. Grant requesting that he.contact the
City Attorney to show cause why he had refused to remove a root beer
stand located on his property.
This case was continued for one week to allow additional time for Mr.
Grant to contact theCity Attorney.
A letter from the Urban Redevelopment Department was submitted to the
Board advising the Board that property owned by Otto Pozsgay, located
at 1302 Chapin Street may be acquired by the Redevelopment Department
but this acquisition may not occur for several years. The Redevelopment
Department strongly recommended that the structure be condemned and
demolished as a safety measure.
Accordingly, the Board directed Mr. Grabarz to inform Mr. Otto Pozsgay
to appear before the Board on August 31, 1964 to show cause why this
structure should not be demolished. Should he not appear, the Board will
take appropriate action to accomplish demolition.
FIRE DEPARTMENT: APPOINTMENT ( J. R. RITTER )
Fire Chief McHenry appeared before the Board and -advised the Board that
Jay R. Ritter, having met all requirements of the Fire Department and
the Pension Board was eligible to appointment as a member of the Fire
Department and requested that the Board approve the appointment.
The bbard, following the recommendation of the Fire Chief and the Pension
Board approved the appointment of Mr. Ritter, effective September 1�- 1964.

PERMISSION TO ADVERTISE: FIRE DEPARTMENT ( 2 SEDANS AND 1 TRUCK )
At the request of the Fire Chief, permission was granted for the Fire
Department to advertise for one 4-Door V8 Sedan, one 4-Door 6 cyl.
Sedan and one I Ton Pick-up Truck. Advertisements will be placed in
the South Bend Tribune and the Tri-County News on August 28, and
September 4, 1964. Bids will be opened on September 14, 1964
Specifications submitted by the Chief are available in the Office of
the Board.
ELECTRICAL DEPARTMENT INSTALLATIONS
Following the recommendation of the Electrical Department Superintendent
the following.installations were approved:
1. Petition for street light in the 500 block of N. Allen 8r
2. Petition for street light at corner of Columbia and Fox Street.
PETITIONS: STREET LIGHTS - COUNCILMAN SZYMKONIAK
two Petitions pigned by restdents of the areas and submitted to the''
Board by Councilmanf Sk,V" `1&6 'iik were referred to, the Electrical Department
for investigation and recommendation. The petitions are:
1. Petition from residents of,Prast Boulevard requesting a street
light on Prast between Goodland and Bendix Drive.
2. Petition from residents of Frederickson Street requesting a street
light in the 2400 block of Frederickson at south-east side corner
of alley of property 2404-Frederickson.
TRAFFIC ENGINEER ( INSTALLATIONS )
Following the recommendation of the Traffic Engineer, the following
installations were approved:
Stop signs installed on Emerson Avenue, both sides, at Mishawaka Ave.
Time limit signs installed to cover 110 S. Hill St. ( 2 hour limit ).
TRAFFIC ENGINEER; REQUEST - STOP SIGN ( COUNCILMAN SZYMKOWIAK )
A request from Councilman Szymkowiak for a four-way stop sign at the
corner of Olive and Longley Streets was submitted to the Board, examined
and referred to the Traffic Engineer for investigation and recommendation.
PETITION: TRAFFIC ENGINEER ( TRAFFIC SIGN )
A.Petition from residents of the 700 block of Allen Street requesting
the installation of a Warning Safety sign placed, according to the
Petition "from Sherman to Allen" was referred to the City Traffic Engineer
for investigation and clarification and recommendation.
The Board requested the Traffic Engineer to interview some of the residents
named on the Petition to ascertain where the sign is to be placed and
report his findings back to the Board.
WEIGHTS & MEASURES REPORT
A report for the month of July, 1964 from the Weights & Measures Department
was accepted and ordered placed on file.
APPLICATION: POLICE AUXILIARY SCHOOL PATROL
An application from Mrs. Arlene Fields for Police Auxiliary School Patrol
was accepted and ordered placed on file.

STREET LIGHT OUTAGE REPORTS
Street Light Outage Reports were accepted and ordered placed on file.
There being no further business to come before. the Board, the meeting
was adjourned at 11:25 A.M.
