HomeMy WebLinkAbout08/10/64 Board of Public Works MinutesAugust 10, 1964 A regular meeting of the Board of Public Safety was held on Monday, August 101 1964 at 10:00 A.M. All members were present. Minutes of the last regular meeting were read and approved. Vouchers were approved and ordered paid to the various suppliers. BUILDING DEPARTMENT: SUB -STANDARD DIVISION (HEARINGS) Comes now Mr'. and Mrs. Blad, owners of property located at 715 S. Meade Street to show cause why property has not been repaired, as ordered. Mr. Grabarz advised the Board that this property had been condemned in 1963. An appeal: had been granted in order to have property repaired. A second appeal was granted for.additional time and the owners given until May, 1964 to accomplish this. At this date nothing has been done and complaints from residents of the area have been made. Mrs. Blad advised the Board that because of illness her husband had not been able to make the repairs. She further stated that she did not know what repairs were necessary. Mr. Grabarz stated that a list of needed repairs had been given to the owners. Mr. and Mrs. Blad requested that -this hearing be continued in order to allow time for a contractor to look at house. Mr. Grabarz was directed to prepare another list of required repairs to bring house up to Code and go over the list with Mr. and Mrs. Blad. The Board continued the hearing until August 17,. 1964 at which time Mr.ead Mrs. Blad must reach a decision whether the house will be repaired or demolished. It was reported to the Board that the root beer standson property owned by Roland Grant are still on the property. Councilman Szymkowiak requested that they be removed or made safe. Location: 1629 Linden Ave. The Board requested Mr. Grabarz to notify Mr. Grant to make the stands safe by next Monday and to be present at the meeting of August 17, 1964. Mr. Grabarz submitted a progress report on property owned by Mr. Frank Cook, located at 506 27th Street. Mr. Grabarz reported that a new list of repairs needed had been submitted to Mr. Cook who was to have appeared before -the Board by August 10, 1964 with the contractor who would make the necessary repairs. Mr. Cook failed to appear, although he was notified by Certified Letter. A Mr. Epley was the person named by Mr. Cook as the person who was the buyer of the house and resided at that address. However, Mr. Grabarz reported that his Department was informed by a lady living at the house that Mr. Epley did not live there. Mail addressed to him at the subjet property address was returned unclaimed. Mr. Grabarz was directed by the Board to write to Mr. Cook and advise him that unless he appeared before the Board on August 17. 1964 the Board will let contract for demolition. OPENING OF BIDS:- DEMOLITION - SUB -STANDARD DIVISION The following bids were received for demolition of the properties listed below, were opened by the Board and read aloud. All bids were in order: Property located at: 917 Marietta Street. Chas. Clough 25412 State Road #2 South Bend, Ind. A & J. Demolition 318 O'Brien South Bend, Ind. $430.00 retain salvage $500.00 stack material $375.00 retain salvage $390.00 stack material. It appearing that the bid of A & J Demolition is the lowest and best bid, it is so awarded to A & J Demolition. Property located at: 1728 N. Kaley St. A & J Demolition 318 O'Brien South Bend, Ind. Chas. Clough 25412 State Road #2 South Bend, Ind. $350.00 retain salvage $365.00 stack material $290.00 retain salvage $375.00 stack material It appearing that the bid of Chas. Clough is. the lowest and best bid, it is so awarded to Chas. Clough. Property located at: 1609 Franklin St. South Bend, Ind. Chas, Clouj�h 25412 State Road #2 South Bend, Ind. A & J Demolition 318 0!Brien South Bend, Ind. $680.00 retain salvage $750.00 stack material. $475.00 retain salvage $490.00 stack material It appearing that the bid of A & J Demolition is the lowest and best bit, it is so awarded to A & J Demolition. Mr. Grabarz was directed to so advise the owner of thepPoperty, Rev. Thompson. ELECTRICAL DEPARTMENT - RE • BUDGET Mr. Eugene Radecki, Electrical Department Superintendent, advised the Board that he had investigated the budget and there are sufficient funds available to install additional street lights at this time. ELECTRICAL.DEPARTMENT (-INSTALLATIONS OF LIGHTS ) Following the recommendation of Eugene Radecki, Electrical Department Superintendent, the following installations were approved: 1. 1 - 4000 lumen streetlight at intersection of Huntly Court and Thornhill Drive. 2.1 - 4000 lumen street light in 500 block of S. Falcon Street. ELECTRICAL DEPARTMENT - REQUEST FOR STREET LIGHT( JR ACHIEVEMENT ) Mr. Lloyd S. Taylor,.City Engineer, requested the installation of a 6000 lumen street light at corner of Louise and Ruskin Street because of the location of the -new Jr. -Achievement Facility. 1 1 FIRE DEPARTMENT ( APPOINTMENTS ) J. RITTER,_ J. BECKER At the request of Fire Chief McHenry the following applicants to the Fire Department will be sent to the City Doctor for physical examination and also the Pension Board Doctor. If the applicants meet all qualifi- cations and pass the physical examinations they will be appointed to the Fire Department: John M.J. Becker Jay Randall Ritter SPECIAL POLICE COMMISSION & BOND_ ( A.D.T. ) The Board approved the Special Police Commission and Bond for Raymond Gene Powers, employed by the American District Telegraph Company, Inc. and ordered same placed on file. APPLICATIONS: POLICE DEPARTMENT - AUX. SCHQ00L PATROL The following applications for the Police Auxiliary School Patrol were accepted and ordered placed on file: Artie Janice Bussert Louise Julia Kurzhal Ellen Maxine Mussehe APPLICATION: POLICE DEPAR7kENT An application for the Police Department from Keith LeRoy Fry was accepted and ordered placed on file. APPLICATION: FIRE DEPARTMENT An application for the Fire Department from Thomas Floyd Opfel was accepted and ordered placed on file. REPORT: TRAFFIC ENGINEER ,( TRAFFIC SIGN ) N. ALLEN ST. Clem Hazinski, Traffic Engineer, submitted a report in response to a request by the Board in answer to a Petition for a "Watch for Children t' sign at the alley next to 522 N. Allen Street. After investigation, it was the recommendation that such a sign be installed. Following the recommendation of Mr. Hazinski, the installation was approved. TRAFFIC ENGINEER ( INSTALLATIONS ) Following the recommnendation of the Traffic Engineer, Clem Hazinski, the following installations were approved: 2 - 30 Minute Time Limit signs installed to cover 1345 N. Ironwood Drive 2 - 30 Minute Time Limit signs installed to cover 1406 Miami Street. STREET LIGHT OUTAGE REPORTS Street Light Outage Reports were accepted and ordered placed on file.
