A regular meeting of the Board of Public Safety was held on Monday,
February 24, 1964 at 10:00 A.M. All members were present. Minutes
of the last regular meeting were read .and approved. --Vouchers were
approved and ordered paid'A o,the various suppliers.
AWARDING OF BID: REMODELING OF FIRE STATION NO. 4
After tabulation and examination of the various bids received; and
since -it appears that the following is the -lowest and best bid, it
is the decision of the Board that the bid for remodeling of Fire
Station No. 14 be awarded as follows:
Carl J. Reinke & Sons Inc.
1522 W. Ford Street
South Bend, Indiana
Remodeling :of; Fire-- Station -No. 4, 1240 W. Thomas Street,
in accordance with specifications $5,888.00
APPROVAL OF SHIRT STYLE - FIRE DEPARTMENT
Comes now Fire Chief McHenry and requests approval of the Board of
a new type of winter sportejacket for firemen to wear while fighting
fires. The shirt would eliminate the necessity of wearing a necktie
which has proved unsatisfactory while fighting fires, due to the
fact that they cannot be cleaned satisfactorily and create a hazard.
The jacket had the approval of the Firemen's Association.
After inspection of the jacket, and following the recommendation of
Chief McHenry, the new type of jacket was approved.
POLICE DEPARTMENT: PERMISSION TO ATTEND NATIONAL PISTOL CHAMPIONSHIP
MATCHES
Permission was granted to the following police officers to attend the
Mid -winter National Pistol Championship Matches in Tampa, Florida
from March 6., 1964 to March 18, 1964. Expenses for the trip will be
assumed by the St. Joseph Valley Lodge 362 Fraternal Order of Police,
co-sponsors of the Police Pistol Team:
Sgt. R. Jensen, 3rd Detail, Patrol Division
Cpl. R. Albright, 2nd Detail, Range Officer
Patrolman J. Szweda, K-9 Detail, Patrol Division
Patrolman J. Radecki, 2nd Detail, Patrol Division
Patrolman F. Szuba, k-9 Detail, Patrol Division
PERMISSION TO ADVERTISE: POLICE DEPARTMENT AUTOMOBILES
Comes now Police Chief Hampton and requests permission to advertise
for 15 automobiles for use of the Police Department.
Permission granted and Clerk of the Board requested to place advertise-
ments in The South Bend Tribune and the Tri-County News on March 6,
1964, March 13, 1964. Sealed bids will be opened on March 23, 1964.
POLICE DEPARTMENT REPORT: OFFENSES REPORTED TO POLICE DECEMBER 1963
A report for December, 1963 itemizing the Offenses Reported to Police
was accepted by the Board and ordered placed on file.
APPLICATIONS: POLICE DEPARTMENT
The following applications for the Police Department were accepted and
ordered placed on file: David Leon Clizbe and James Ray Kile.

PETITION: STREET LIGHT ( ELECTRICAL DEPARTMENT )
A Petition from residents of the 900 block of S. Logan Street for
installation of a street light on Logan Street between Mishawaka
Avenue and Vine Street was submitted to the Board.
The Petition was referred to the Electrical Department for investigation
and recommendation.
STREET LIGHT OUTAGE REPORTS
Street Light Outage Reports were accepted and ordered placed on
file.
HEALTH DEPARTMENT REPRESENTATIVE: ( HEALTH CERTIFICATES )
Mr. Stephen Molnar, representing the Health Department was present
at the meeting.
The.Board requested Mr. Molnar to request that Dr. Howe of the Board
of Health advising the procedure now being followed with reference
to food handlers and restaurant employees in lieu of a physical
examination.
BUILDING DEPARTMENT - SUB -STANDARD DIVISION ( HEARINGS )
Comes now John Grabarz, of the Sub -Standard Division of the Building
Department, and informs the Board that Mary and Michael Medich,
owners of property located at 716 E. Ohio Street had been requested
to appear before the Board on this date to show cause why demolition
orders had not been carried out. The Building is now vacant. Mr.

After hearing Mr. Grabarz, it was the decision of the Board that
the hearing be continued until March 23, 1964. If structure is
now up to standard by that date it will be demolished. However, it
was Mr. Medich's opinion that he could accomplish the demolishment
by March 23.
Mr. Grabarz submitted a letter from August Ranschaert, owner of
property located at 128 N. Adams Street in which Mr. Ranschaert states
that he is financially unable to comply with demolition order issued
by the Sub -Standard Division. He therefore requests that the City
utilize its means to demolish the dwelling and garage
Mr. Grabarz was directed to advertise for bids for demolition.
BUILDING DEPARTMENT: HOUSE MOVE
Comes now Mr. Forrest West, Building Commissioner, and requests
permission to move a house from 921 Lincoln Way East to 229 S. Logan
Street.
In order that residents in the area be advised of the proposed house.
move, the matter was continued for one week and the Building Department
Commissioner advised to address letters to residents and submit to
the Board for filing.
There being no further business to come before the Board, the meeting
was adjourned at 11:15 A.M.
