HomeMy WebLinkAbout10/28/63 Board of Public Works MinutesOctober 28, 1963 A regular meeting of the Board of Public Safety was held on Monday, October 28, 1963 at 10:00 A.M. Messrs. R. S. Andrysiak and Edwin L. Davies were present. Minutes of the last regular meeting were read and approved. Vouchers were approved and ordered paid to the various suppliers. PETITION: STREET LIGHT(VAN BUREN STREET) A Petition from residents of the area of VanBuren, Cleveland and Lindsey Streets requesting the installation of a street light in the 1200 b lock of VanBuren Street, specifically Pole Number 532 in I & M Section J 234 was:7referred to the Electrical Depart- ment for investigation and recommendation. STREET LIGHT INSTALLATION Following the recommendation of Nicholas Horvath, Electrical Department Superintendent, the installation of 1 - 4000 lumen street light at McKinley and Francis Street. LETTER OF APPRECIATIONN(aTOP SIGNS_ INSTALLATION, A letter of appreciation for the prompt installation of stop 'sign''=s at Victoria and Marina and Victoria and Clyde Streets was received from Mrs. James J. Cierzniak, accepted and ordered placed on file. TRAFFIC ENGINEER TRAFFIC SIGN INSTALLATIONS Following the recommendation of the Traffic Engineer, the following installations were approved: Stop signs installed on Twyckenham Drive, both sides, at Rockne Drive, making this a 4-way stop intersection. Stop signs installed on Jefferson, both sides, at Camden making this a 4-way stop. Yield sign installed on Hass St., southeast corner, at Hepler. Yield sign installed on Dale St., both sides, at Oakside. Stop sign installed on Dale Street, both sides, at Eckman. Stop signs installed on Carroll St., both sides, at Eckman St. STREET LIGHT OUTAGE REPORTS_ Street Light Outage Reports were accepted and ordered placed on file. APPLICATION: FIRE DEPARTMENT_ An application from Robert James Urbanski for the Fire Department was accepted and ordered placed on file. PERMISSION TO ADVERTISE: POLICE DEPARTMENT_( 4 THREE WHEEL MOTORCYCLES Permission was given to the Police Department to advertise for the purchase of 4 1964 Three Wheel Motorcycles. Advertisements will be placed in The South Bend Tribune and The Record on Nobeinber 1 and November 89 1963. Sealed bids will be opened on November 12, 1963. BOND RENEWAL: SPECIAL POLICE ( KESTER A renewal of a Special Police Bond for Allen E. Kester, employed by Radio & TV Distributing Co. was approved and ordered placed on file. MONTHLY REPORT: POLICE DEPARTMENT A report for the month of September, 1963 from the Police Department was accepted and ordered placed on file. 1 1 1 24 REQUEST: FRANCES SHOP, PLANTERS Mr. Harvey L`. Sanner, Jr.; Controller of the Frances Shbp, appeared before the Board to request permission for the Frances Shop to place two small planters on the sidewalk at each corner of their building located at 225-227-229 S. Michigan Street. These planters will be fifteen to eighteen inches in diameter. Permission granted provided insurance indemnifying the City of South Bend in the following amounts be obtained and Proof of such insurance filed with the Board: $100,000 individual accident, $300,000 aggregate accident and $25,000 property damage. BUILDING DEPARTMENT= PROJECTION AND PLANTER INSTALLATION Comes Now Mr. Louis Smogor, Building Commissioner, and requests permission for Mr. Brinson, owner of property located at 1238-1240 W. Washington Avenue to erect a 12 inch projection of step and planter 33 feet x 12 x 3 ft. high. Steps will be the following dimensions: 2 steps, 7 feet long. The Board stipulated that insurance indemnifying the City of South Bend be obtained in the following amounts: $100,000 per indvidual accident, $300,000 aggregate accident and $259000 property damage. Proof of Insurance must be filed in the office of the Board. SUB -STANDARD DIVISION ( HEARINGS_) Comes now John Grabarz, Director of the Sub -Standard Division of the Building Department and advises the Board that property located at 320 W. Marion Street, owned by George Stark had not been torn down as promised at the time an extension of time was granted. Said extension has expired. Mr. Grabarz requested permission to advertise for demolition bids. Permission granted. Mr. Grabarz requested permission to hire someone to clear away debris from property located at 334 N. St. Peter Street. The debris has been standing on the property since the structure was demolished some time ago. Mr. Grabarz also advised the Board that his department has been unable to locate the owner of the property. The Board ruled that it would be permissible to have the property cleared of debris, provided such intention was relayed to the owner and all legal procedures are followed. Mr. Grabarz must have proof that all attempts possible had been made to locate the owner of the property. BIDS: DEMOLITION OF PROPERTY The following bids were received for demolition of property located at 15262 Liston Street. The property is a PBA parcel: A & J Demolition B & 0 Wrecking $975.00 with salvage $625.00 " " The bid will be awarded to B & 0 Wrecking Company for $625:.00. HEALTH DEPARTMENT REPRESENTATIVE Mr. Stephen Molnar, representative of the Health Department was present at the meeting. 1' 244 There being no further business to come before the Board, the meeting was adjourned at 10:30 A.M.
