A regular meeting of the Board of Public Safety was held on Tuesday,
September 3, 1963 at 10:00 A.M. All members were present. Minutes
of the last regular meeting were read and approved. Vouchers were
approved and ordered paid to the various suppliers.
REPORT OF _MAYOR BRUG_GNER'S COMMITTEE ON SOUTH BEND_ PARKING_
A letter from Mayor Bruggner, addressed to the Board, and enclosing a
Report of his Committee on South Bend Parking was considered by the
Board.
After due consideration, it was the unanimous decision of the Board to
approve the recommendation of the Mayor's Committee and the recommendation
of the Mayor on the adoption of this report by the Board and that a
Resolution be submitted to the Common Council of the City of South
Bend for consideration and adoption, approving the action of the
Board.
Mr. Louis Chapleau, attorney, appeared before the Board to oppose
the approval of such a Resolution concerning the acquisition of
two parcels of land.
After hearing Mr.,.IChOpleau, it was the unanimous decision of the
Board that the Resolution be approved and referred to the Common
Council for its acceptance or r@jection at the next regular meeting
on September 9, 1963.
EXECUfION_OF CONTRACT: ELECI'RIC CURRENT AGREEMENT TRAFFIC SIGNALS
,STATE HIGHWAY COMMISSION) �
The Board approved an Agreement between the City of South Bend and
the Indiana State Highway Commission for the modernization and/or
installation of traffic signals on U.S. 20 and U.S. 31, Lincolnway
West and Michigan Street respectively.
This Agreement will be forwarded to the State Highway Commission for
execution by the Executive Director and return to the Office of the
Board.
BUILDING DEPARTMENT_- SUB-STANDARDDIVISION(HEARINGS )
Comes now Peter Gillis, Jr., with reference to property located at
931 E. Sorin Street and requests an extension of 60 days in order to
bring property up to standard.
Permission granted.
With reference to property located at 736 N. Francis Street, owned by
Mr. Mitchell, this hearing is continued for one week, or until
September 9, 1963.
BIDS FOR DEMOLITION(SUB-STANDARD DIVISION
Bids for demolition for the following addresses were examined by the
Board:

The Bid was awarded to B & O Demolition Co. for $265.00.

The Bid of B & 0 Demolition Company was rejected on -the grounds
that it was improperly filled out.
The bid was awarded to A & J Wrecking Company for $275.00 with
salvage.
CERTIFICATE OF INSURANCE.(,STRANTZ - PRAIRIE AVENUE CANOPY_)
A Certificate of Insurance for the erection of a canopy on.property
located at 1614 Prairie Avenue, requested by Belleville Lumber
Company was accepted and ordered placed on file. The prpperty
owners are Ignatious & Marie Strantz.
TRAFFIC ENGINEER LT11AFFIC INSTALLATIONS )
Following the recommendation of the Traffic Engineers the following
installations were approved:
12 Minute Parking signs installed at 813 & 821 S. Michigan St.
ELECTRICAL DEPARTMENT INSTALLATIONS
Following the recommendation of the Electrical DeFartment, the
Following installations were approved:
1. - 1 4000 lumen street light at 822 S. 33rd St.
2. - 2 - 4000 lumen street lights on Virginia St., between
Indiana & Broadway
3. - 2 - 6000 lumen street lights on Eddy St., in front of
School Field Entrance.
STREET LIGHT OUTAGE REPORTS
Street Light Outage Reports were accepted and ordered placed on file.
WEIGHFS &_MEASURES MONTHLY REPORT
A Report for the month of August from the Weights & Measures
Department was accepted and ordered placed on file.
APPLICATION: POLICE AUXILIARY SCHOOL PATROL
An application for the Police Auxiliary School Patrol from Mrs.
Imogene Berry was accepted and ordered placed on file.
HEALTH DEPARTMENT REPRESENTATIVE
Mr. Stephen Molnar, representing the Health Department was present at
the meeting.
REPORTS: FIRE _DEPARTMENT _PROBATIONARY FIR_EME_N
A report from Lt. John A. Flichek addressed to Alex Andrzejewski, Fire
Chief; concerning Fireman Clarence J. Kaminski after six months on
the Department as a probationary fireman recommends that said fireman
be made a first class fireman.
A similar report from—Lt. Filchak concerning Thomas Jozwiak after 9 months
on the Fire Department as a probationary fireman recommends that he be
made a first class fireman.

A report from Lt. Andrew, Var,gyas,:addressed to Alex. Andrzejewski,.Fire
'_Chip,f, to;ncerning Fireman Thomas J. Balukiewicz after nine months
on the Fire Department recommends that he be made a firet class
fireman.
The Board accepted the reports but delayed action on the recommendations,
pending receipt of a recommendation on the probationers from the Fire
Chief.
These recommendations will be- considered on September 9, 1963.
There being no further business to come before the Board, the meeting
was adjourned at 10:55 A.M.
