A regular meeting of the Board of Public Safety was held on Monday,
August 12, 1963 at.10:00 A.M. All members were present. Minutes of
the last regular meeting were read and approved. Vouchers were
approved and ordered paid to the various suppliers.
BUILDING DEPARTMENT- ( BELLEVILLE LUMBER - ERECE CANOPY
Belleville Lumber Company requested permission to erect -a canopy
at 1614 Prairie Avenue two feet over public property. This request
was approved by the Building Department.
Permission granted, provided insurance, indemnifying the City of
South Bend, in the following amounts be obtained: $100)000 individual
accident, $3009000 aggregate accident and $25,000 property damage.
Proof of insurance should be filed with the Board.
BUILDING DEPARTMENT: SUB -STANDARD DIVISION_
Comes now John Grabarz and advises the Board that he had received three
bids for demolition of property located at 919 Marietta Street.
The bids are as follows:

It was the decision of the Board that the bid be awarded to B & 0
Wrecking Co., for $225.00.
Comes now Fairy Lee Graham, owner of property at 1125 Burns Avenue to
show cause why she has not complied with demolition order issued by
the Sub -Standard Division.
Mr. Charles Howell, representing Mrs. Graham, advised tha Board that he
would like to inspect the premises to see what could be done with this
property.
After hearing all who wished to be heard, the Board continued this hearing
for one week to allow for inspection and report from Mr. Howell.
With reference to property located at 15262 Liston Street, owned by
Sam and Clara Winston. This hearing was continued for one week.
TRAFFIC ENGINEER: REPORT ON CLOSING PARKING METERS
Clem Hazinski, Traffic Engineer, submitted a written report regarding
the question raised by Miss Virginia Guthrie as to the reason for closing
some parking meters on Saturdays and other hours during the week.
The Report was read by the Board, copy of said Report given to Miss
Guthrie and Mr. Hazinski requested to meet with Miss Guthrie after the
meeting to further discuss this matter.
The original Report was accepted and ordered placed on file.
TRAFFIC ENGINEER: LETTER - SAMPLE AND OLIVE STREETS RAILROAD CROSSING_
A letter from Mr. Thad M. Jones to the City Engineer was submitted to
the Board. Mr. Jones complained about the condition of the crossing
over the railroad tracks at the intersection of Sample and Olive Streets.
The letter was referred to the Traffic Engineer for investigation.
The Board further requested Mr. Hazinski to get in touch with the
New Yori Central and Grand Trunk & Western Railroad concerning the
deterioration at this crossing, if necessary.
PERMISSION TO ADVERTISE: POLICE DEPARTMENT - ALTOMOBILES
Comes now Police Chief Harman and requests permission to advertise
for the following:
1. One Four Door Sedan, Standard 6 cyl. engine.
2. Five Four Door Sedans, Heavy duty V-8 engine, 289 cu. in.
and one Four Door Station Wagon, Heavy duty V-8 engine, 289 cu. in.
Permission granted and the Clerk of the Board was directed to place
advertisements in The South Bend Tribune and The Record on August 16,
August 23, 1963. Sealed bids will be opened on August 26, 1963 at
the meeting of the Board.
POLICE DEPARTMENT: DEMOTION DET. SGT. E. J. NAWROCKI�
Following the recommendation of Police Chief Harman, the Board approved
the demotion of Detective Sergeant Edward J. Nawrocki to the rank of
Patrolman, to remain in the Detective Bureau, effective Friday,
August 16, 1963.
SPECIAL POLICE COMMISSION AND BOND ( HHUGHIE E. NALL.Y Z
The Board approved the Police Commission and Bond for Hughie E. Nally,
726 Cleveland Ave., South Bend, Indiana. Mr. Nally is an employee
of the American District Telegraph Co., Inc.
APPLICATION:_POLICE DEPARTMENT
An application for the Police Department from Gerald Louis Jankowski
was accepted and ordered placed on file.
ELECTRICAL DEPARTMENT: INSTALLATION
Following the recommendation of Roger DeClercq, Assistant Superintendent
of the Electrical Department, the Board approved the installation of
a street light on Napier St. at the alley between Walnut and Chestnut.
STREET LIGHT OUTAGE REPORTS
Street Light Outage Reports were accepted and ordered placed on file.
WEIGHTS & MEASURES MONTHLY REPORT
A Report from the Department of Weights & Measures for the month of
July, 1963 was accepted and ordered placed on file.
HEALTH DEPARTMENT REPRESENTATIVE
Mr. Stephen Molnar of the St. Joseph County Health Department was present
at the meeting, representing the Health Department.
There being no further business to come before the Board, the meting was
adjourned at 11:15 A.M. �A1
