HomeMy WebLinkAbout10/22/62 Board of Public Works Minutes8i October 22, 1962 A regular meeting of the Board of Public Safety wa.� held on Monday,, October 22, 1962 at 10:00 A.M. Messrs. R. S. Andrysiak and Irving J. Smith were present. Minutes of the last regular meeting were read and approved. Vouchers were approved and ordered paid to the various suppliers. BUILDING DEPARTMENT ( TOWN TOWER MOTEL - ERECf SIGN ) Comes now Mra.,.Peck of the Building'Department and requests permission for the Town tower to erect a sign at Town Tower Motel. Mr. Peck submitted a sketch showing the location of the proposed sign. The matter was taken under advisement and studied, and it was the decision of the Board that since an encroachment on public property was found to be at grade and only a matter of a couple of inches permission to erect the sign was granted. Insurance in usual amount requested. BUILDING DEPARTMENT - SUB -STANDARD DIVISION ( HEARINGS ) Comes now John Grabarz, Director of the Sub -Standard Division of the Building Department and advises the Board that Mr. Harold Koehler, 55316 Hickory Road, Mishawaka who was also present at this meeting, had stated that he has purchased the property commonly known as.106-106i S. St. Louis Blvd. from Mrs. Dorothy Grose. The Board ruled that Mr. Koehler appear on.:Wednesday morning, October 24, 1962 at "Sf30 A.M. with documents to show proof of purchase of this property to the satisfaction of the Sub -Standard Division of the Building Department. If these orders are not carried out, Mr. Grabarz was authorized to advertise for demolishment of this property; said advertisements to be submitted on Wednesday noon, October 24, 1962. A progress report on property located at 527 Euclid Avenue and belonging to the White Estate was presented by attorney Harry Taylor. Mr. Taylor informed the Board that he had contacted the attorneys for said Estate in Chicago and requested that they be present at a hearing with reference to this property. The attorneys failed to appear. It was the decision of the Board that Mr. Grabarz prepare to advertise for demolition of this property and to notify Mr. Taylor of this intention so that he may relay the information to the attorneys for this Estate. With reference to property located at 1613 W. Ewing Avenue, represented bu Mr. Nemeth, attorney, Mr. Grabarz reported that Mr. Nemeth had been requested to appear before the Board on this date. Since. he failed to appear, it was the decision of the Board that demolition orders be prepared and notification of such intention be forwarded to Mr. Nemeth. With reference to property owned by Glen R. and Sara Moody, located at 418 W. Madison St., at the recommendation of Mr. Grabarz, this hearing was continued until October 29, 1962. CIVIL DEFENSE ( DEMONSTRATION - F- FULTON OOUNfy John Klaybor, Director of St. Joseph County Civil Defense, was.granted permission to move Civil Defense equipment to the Fulton County Four-H Fair Grounds on October 25, 1962 in order to conduct a demonstration of Civil Defense equipment capabilities in the event of a major disaster. The program will begin at 5:00 P.M. EST and will be concluded at 7:00 P, M. TRAFFIC ENGINEER ( NEW YORK CENTRAL RAILROAD SPUR - W. WASHINGTON ) Mr. Clem Hazinski, Traffic Engineer, submitted a copy of a letter written to Mr.,William Baerthlein, Division Engineer --of the New York Central Railroad, Chicago, Illinois, concerning the condition of the New York Central spur track on w. Washington Avenue. Mr. Hazinski requested prompt attention to this condition. Mr. Hazinski requested a continuance on this matter to allow more time for Mr. Baerthlein to investigate this situation and report what .action will be taken to correct the situation. ryl.ttiL ucranlmcni S !J. 1YV61E N - fflUVL VV1 Vr- .'11 i L11VU10 , J Comes now Chief Harman and requests the Board to permit. Officer D. Nowak to move to 23810 Marquette Blvd., about one mile from the city limits. Chief Harman informed the Board that Officer Nowak had been a member of the Police Department approximately 12+ years.which would be a sufficient term of service to move outside the city limits. Permission granted. POLICE DEPARTMENT -( ATTEND FED. NARCOTICS SCHOOL CHIEF HARMAN & HUNT_) Permission was granted Chief Harman and Inspector Hunt to attend -a Federal Narcotics School in Washington, D.C. from October 29, 1962 through November 9, 1962. The Board was assured that there was sufficient money in the budget for cost of room and board. The school is free. APPLICATION ( POLICE AUXILIARY SCHOOL PATROL An application from Mrs. Mildred Lucille Rydzinski for the Police Auxiliary School was accepted and ordered placed on file. FIRE DEPARTMENT ( PARCEL OF LAND - FIRE STATION PURPOSE ) A letter from Fire Chief Alex Andrzejewski to the Board recommended that a Parcel of Land beginning at the intersection.of the South right-of-way line of Ireland Road and the West right-of-way line of Lafayette Boulevard, be purchased for an additional Fire Station was examined by the Board and referred to the City Planning Commission for investigation and report. ELECTRICAL DEPARTMENT ( STREET LIGHT INSTALLATIONS) Following the recommendation of Nicholas Horvath, Superintendent of the Electrical Department, the installation of a street light at 1325 N. Adams Street was approved. Following the recommendation of Mr. Horvath, a request for an additional street light at the intersection of Napoleon Boulevard and Foster:Street was denied. This request was submitted by Mr. George V. Schmitt. Mr. Horvath recommended that the foliage around the existing street light at this location be trimmed in order to afford better lighting. The Board directed Mr. Horvath to take the necessary steps necessary to have foliage trimmed in accordance with his recommendation. STREET LIGHT OUTAGE REPORTS Street Light Outage Reports were accepted and ordered placed on file. m TRAFFIC ENGINEER ( ATTEND MEETING - PURDUE Clem Hazinski, Traffic Engineer, was granted permission to attend a Traffic Engineering Meeting to be held at Purdue University on Wednesday, October 24, 1962.
