A regular meeting of the Board of Public Safety was held on Monday,
August 6, 1962 at 10:00 A.M. DST. All members were present. Minutes
of the last regular -meeting were read and approved. Vouchers were
approved and ordered paid to the various suppliers.
Comes now Officer James Robison and admits that the Charge was served
upon him personally on August 3, 1962 and said Charge was read
on this date and he further admitted the violations of Charges Nos.
59 6, 19 and 26 of the Rules and Regulations of the Police Department
of South Bend, and that said violations occurred on the 29th day of
July, 1962.
Said Officer Robison has been suspended since July 29, 1962, and
has not received any pay for the first pay period of August, beginning
August 1, 1962.
It was the decision of the Board that Officer Robison return to work
on this date and that he will continue to work without compensation
up to and including August 15, 1962.
POLICE DEPARTMENT RETIREMENT ( SGT. P. J. MARKO.)
The Board approved the retirement of Sgt. p. J. Marko following
the expiration of his Terminal Leave which will be on September 1,
1962.
POLICE DEPARTMENT PROMOTION ( OFFICER EDWARD J. DUDZINSKI 1
Following the recommendation of Police Chief Harman, the Board approved
the promotion of Patrolman Edward J. Dudzinski to Uniformed Sergeant,
effective September 1, 1962. Officer Dudzinski will thus be filling
the vacanty created by the retirement of Sgt. Marko.
FIRE DEPARTMENT ( ATTEND CONVENTION )
Fire Chief Andrzejewski was granted permission to attend the Indiana
Firemen's Association Convention in Gary, Indiana on August 10, 1962.
REQUEST: ( RE:BANNER FOR FIREMEN'S BALL )
The Board granted a request from the South Bend Firemen's Association,
Fireman Stanley Prezestwor, Dance Chairman, to place a banner on
the front of the Central Fire Station to advertise the Annual Firemen's
Ball.
This request is granted with the stipulation that the banner will not
extend across the street, but will be attached to the building only.
APPLICATION -( FIRE DEPARTMENT )
An application for the Fire Department from Commie Lee Walls was
accepted*pd ordered placed on file.
PETITION: ELIMINATION OF TRUCKS ( FALCON STREET') REFER TRAFFIC ENGINEER
A Petition from residents of the Falcon Street area requesting the
erection of Speed Control Signs and help to eliminate large truck traffic
on Falcon Street from Western Avenue to Washington Avenue was referred
to the Traffic Engineer for investigation and recommendation.
STREET LIGHT OUTAGE REPORTS
Street Light Outage Reports were accepted and ordered placed on file.
INSTALLATION OF STREET LIGHTS ( ELECTRICAL DEPARTMENT
Following the recommendation of Nicholas Horvath, Electrical Department
Superintendent, the following street light installations were approved:

BUILDING DEPARTMENT ( GILBERT'S REMODELING - CANOPY OVER SIDEWALK )
Comes now Verner Lane, Building Commissioner, and requests the Board's
permission to allow.Gilbert's Men's Clothing Store to erect a canopy
10 feet 6 inches high to extend three feet over the sidewalk. This
is in connection with a remodeling of the store front.
Mr. Lane informed the Board that, upon inspection, the remodeling
conformed to all Building Codes.
The Board ranted the request for erection of the cano

all Code provisions are met and provided the City of South Bend is
indemnified with insurance for injury and property damage in the
usual amounts.
BUILDING DEPARTMENT MONTHLY REPORT
A report for the month of July, 1962 from the Building Department was
accepted and ordered placed on file.
BUILDING DEPARTMENT —SUB -STANDARD DIVISION ( HEARINGS
With reference to property owned by 11m. Metzger located at 1838 N.
Elmer Street, Mr. Grabarz, Director of the Sub -Standard Division of
the Building Department was granted permission to advertise for bids
to demolish but directed to notify the owner of such intention.
Permission was granted Mr. Grabarz to proceed with condemnation orders
for property located at 106 and 1062 S. St. Louis Boulevard and to
notify owner of such intention.
A complaint was made to the Board by Mr. Casimir Slott, 203 Chestnut
Street, that a vacant house at 2132 Chestnut Street is being used as
a gathering place for groups.
The Board requested Mr. Grabarz to check into this matter and also
requested the Clerk of the Board to notify the Police Department of
this condition and direct the Police Department to check into this
and submit a report on findings.
There being no further business to come before the Board, the meeting was
adjourned at 10:45 A.M.
