June 25, 1962
A regular meeting of the Board of Public Works & Safety was held on
Monday, June.25, 1962 at 10:00 A.M. DST. All members were present.
Minutes of the last regular meeting were read and approved. Vouchers
were approved and ordered paid to the various suppliers.
BUILDING DEPARTMENT ( HOUSE MOVE )
The Building Department requested permission of the Board to rove a
dwelling from 220 W. Navarre Street to 1362 N. Elmer Street. The owner
and mover of said dwelling is Irvin T. Worden. The dwelling is a
two story dwelling. The house has been inspected by John A. Grabarz,
Director of the Sub -Standard Division of the Building Department and
has been found to be in good condition. All the necessary affidavits
have been received from the utility companies and the property owners
in the immediate vicinity have been notified.
Comes now property owners to protest said move on the grounds that

the house is obsolete and will look out of place in a neighborhood
condittin in g� part, of one story dwellings. The property owners
also wish to know who will occupy this house and what guarantee they
have that it will be kept in good condition.
A petition signed by property owners on Elwood and Elmer Street was
filed with the Board. A letter signed by Mr.a nd Mrs. C. Szczeckowski
and a letter signed by LaVerne MacDonald of 2209 Elwood Avenue was
filed with the Board. Both letters and the petition were ordered
placed on file. Mrs. Dorothk Williams, 1321 N. Elmer appeared to remonstrate.
Mr. Irving J. Smith, Chairman of the Board of Public Safety and
City Attorney, informed the remonstrators, as follows:
If the owner and the mover file bonds indemnifying the City of South
Bend and property owners for any personal damage or property damagaii
and if the house is not in violation of any of the prevailing Codes,
and if it meets the required inspections, said house can be moved and
can be placed on the premises and can be occupied if all of these
conditions are fulfilled.
After all who appeared had been heard on the premises, it was the
decision of the Board to continue this hearing for one week, or until
July 21 1962 in order to allow sufficient time for Mr. Grabarz to
talk personally with the remonstrators and allow them' to inspect the
various Codes and provisions involved in this move.
With reference to a hearing oh property located at 311 E. Paris Street,
at the recommendation of Mr. Grabarz, this hearing is condinued for
six weeks.
A progress report on property located at 812 S. Rush Street was made
by Mr. C. M. Boynton, attorney representing the Hay Estate of which
this property is a part. Mr. Boynton informed the Board that contracts
were entered into with Ham, The Wrecker on June 11, 1962 for removal
of said premises. Mr. Grabarz was directed to contact Ham, The Wrecker
to proceed with this work.
ELECTRICAL DEPARTMENT - STREET LIGHT INSTALLATIONS
Following the recommendation of Nicholas Horvath, Electrical Department
Superintendent, the following installation was approved:
1 - 4000 lumen street at 840 Sylvan Lane.
STREET LIGHT OUTAGE REPORTS
Street Light Outage Reports were accepted and ordered placed on file.
POLICE DEPARTMENT MONTHLY REPORT
A Report for the month of May, 1962 from the Police Department was
accepted and ordered placed on file.
There being no further business to come before the Boards the meeting
was adjourned at 10:50 A.M.
