HomeMy WebLinkAbout05/28/62 Board of Public Works Minutes1 44 1 May 2B1, 1962 A regular meeting of the Board of Public Safety was held on Monday, May 28, 1962 at 10:00 A.M. DST. Messrs. Andrysiak and Smith were present. Minutes of the last regular meeting were read and approved. Vouchers were approved and ordered paid to the. various suppliers.' RAILROAD SLRVEY REPORT - TRAFFIC ENGINEER Comes now Clem Hazinski, Traffic tngineerg and submits his report on the Railroad Survey which the Board directed him to make. In the report, the following phases were covered: I. Chicago,, South Shore & South Bend Railroad A meeting held with officials and engineers reference permanent repair of South Shore trains between Michigan Street and the West City Limits was held. Recommendation was made to replace paving along the right-of-way with permanent type cedar planking. A letter from W. P. Coleton, President and general Manager, indicated that they are planning permanent repairs. 2. New York Central Railroad Mr. Charles J. Barnydt, Division Engineer of tracks stated that crossings at Robinson, Caroline, Twyckenham and Leer Streets will be permanently repaired by re-laying tracks, replacing ties and asphalt to provide for a smoother and safer crossings by vehicles. Work along this line has begun. A letter was sent to Mr. W. Baerthlein, Division Engineer at Chicago Office requesting the crossing on Lincolnway West just west of Wilbur Street be given prompt attention. 3. tennsvlvania Railroad Most repairs of their crossings have been completed in accordance with recommendations of this Department. 4. New Jerseys --Indiana and Illinois -,Railroad Recommended repairs completed. Some permanent repairs will be delayed until appropriations of funds are provided for in their budget. 5. Grand Trunk Railroad Most recommended repairs have been made. 6. Michigan Central Railroad Phase one of a four phase program of permanent repair in the 600 block of Niles Avenue has been completed. Work will continue throughout the summer on this project until all rails have been removed, replaced and new ties and surface permanently repaired. Mr. Hazinski requested permission to order barricades placed on streets as a safety factor, during this South Shore repair program. The Board authorized Mr. Hazinski to take all steps necessary to expedite this work and commended Mr. Hazinski on his excellent work in connection with this Survey. ATTEND SCHOOL ( TRAFFIC ENGINEER - CITY ELECTRICAL DEPT. PERSONNEL ) Clem Hazinski requested permission to send two City Electrical Department employees to the Crouse -Hinds Traffic Signal Controller School in Indianapolis on June 5 and 6, 1962. These men are: George Ladewski and Michael J. Wagenka. Permission granted. 1 0 1 45 ATTEND MEETING ( TRAFFIC ENGINEER ) Clem Hazinski, Traffic Engineer, requested permission- to attend a Crouse -Hinds Equipment Demonstration in Indianapolis, June 4, 1962. Theme will be no cost to the City for this trip. Permission granted. TRAFFIC ENGINEER ( TRAFFIC SIGNS) Following the recommendation of Clem Hazinski, Traffic Engineer, the following installation was approved: No Parking 1 P.M. to 6 P.M. sign at 100 W. Washington Avenue, north side, to cover parking meter located just east of alley. LETTER Q3MMENDING FIRE DEPARTMENT A letter from Mr. John E. Doran, addressed to Fire Chief Andrzejewski, was referred to the Board for examination. The letter commended the Fire Department, Company No. 14 in particular, for efficient and courteous manner in which the Fire Department handled a call from Mr. Doran requesting the services of the Fire Department. ELECTRICAL INSPECTION DEPARTMENT REQUEST (TRANSFER LADDER TRUCK A letter from Mr. H. E. Harrison, Chief lectrical Inspector with the Electrical Inspection Department to the Board, requested the transfer of a if ton Ladder Truck from the Electrical Inspection Department to the City Electrical Department. Mr. Harrison explained that the Electrical Department has great need for the use of this truck and has an adequate place to house- t; also there is an understanding between him and Mr. Horvath of the klectrical Department whereby the Electrical Inspection Department may have the use of this equipment. The Traffic Department will also have the use of this vehicle, according to Mr. Harrison. Permission granted. ELECTRICAL DEPARTMENT-4 STREET LIGHTS ) Following the recommendation of Nicholas Horvath, Superintendent of the Electrical Department, the following installations were approved: Install 17 - 409000 lumen fluorescent lights on South Michigan St. Install 14 - 109000 lumen incandescent lights on Riverside Drive between Eastmont and Darden Road. PROMOTIONS( POLICE DEPARTMENT ) Following the recommendation- of Police Chief Harman, the following promotions were approved, effective June 1, 1962: Officer Thomas B. Grant to Uniformed Sergeant Officer John J. Leader to Detective Sergeant Officer Eugene F. Flowers to Detective Sergeant. MONTHLY REPORT ( POLICE DEPARTMENT ) The Report for the month of April, 1462 from the Police Department was accepted and ordered placed on file. M SPECIAL POLICE BOND A Special Police Bond -for Special Police James Shields was approved' and ordered placed on file. POLICE DEPARTMENT ( APPLICATIONS ) The following applications for the Police Department were accepted and ordered placed on file: Bruce Richard Stickley, George Gust Relias. AUXILIARY SCHOOL PATROL APPLICATION A_n application for the Police Auxiliary School Patrol from Mrs. Opal Ruth Kincaid was accepted and ordered placed on file. FIRE DEPARTMENr(APPLICATIONS) An application for the Fire Departmentfrom George Gust Relias was accepted and ordered placed on file. STREET LIGHT OUTAGE REPORTS Street Light Outage Reports were accepted and ordered placed on file. BUILDING DEPARTMENT_- SUB -STANDARD DIVISION (HEARINGS) With reference to property located at 106-108 Sadie Street, since the owner of this property has been located and failed to appear for this hearing, Mr. Grabarz requested permission to proceed with advertising for demolition of this property. Permission granted. gith reference to property located at 812 S. Rush Street' at the request of Mr. Grabarz, this hearing was continued until June 4' 1962, There being no further business to come before the Board' the meeting was adjourned at 10:45 A.M. Attest:
