HomeMy WebLinkAbout04/02/62 Board of Public Works Minutes2 1. April 22 1962 A regular meeting of the Board of Public Safety was held on Monday, April 2, 1962 at 10:00 A.M. CST. All members were present. Minutes of the last regular meeting and the meeting of March 19, 1962 were read and approved. Vouchers were approved and ordered paid to the various suppliers. PETITION: RE- JUNK YARD MICHIANA AUTO SALVA E) Comes now Chester Muszynski, Councilman 6th istrict and Chester Ladewski, Councilman -at -Large, with a Petition from pesidents of an area in the vicinity of 1906 S. Olive Street. Said petitioners request the Board to take action to stop Mr. Weaver of Michiana Auto Salvages located at 1906 S. Olive Street from forming a junkyard at the above address. This property, according to the petitioners, is zoned "D" Light Industrial which does not permit junkyards. The petitioners also state that Mr. Weaver is also using property in the 1900 Block Phillipa for parking Semi -Tractors and Trailers. This property is zoned "B" Residential. The Petition also alleges that there are tractors parked on parkways and two alleys which are City property; and there -is an 3 ft. fence approximately 3 ft. in a public alley. The Board informed the Councilmen that this matter is being investigated and has already been investigated by the Fire Department and the Dept. has been directed to take whatever .action is necessary if operations are in violations of City Codes, and owner will be notified to cease and desist forthwith if there are violations. The matter has been brought to the attention of the Building Department to bring these matters to the attention of the proper authorities. BUILDING DEPARTMENT Comes now Verner Lane, Building Commissioners, and requests permission to attend Indiana Inspectors' School, at University of Notre Dame on April 24, and April 259 1962. ,Mr. Lane also requests permission for 9 inspectors in the Building Department to attend this School, using staggering shifts. Mr. Lane reported that there is sufficient funds in the budget for this project. Permission granted. BUILDING DEPARTMENT - SUB-STAINDARD DIVISION ( HEARING) Comes now John Grabarz, Director of the Sub -Standard Division of the Building Department with reference to a hearing scheduled for this date concerning property located at 1721 N. Elmer Street. Mr. Grabarz requested that this case be continued for one week, or until April 99 1962 to allow owner more time to make proper arrangements for disposition of property involved. Permission granted. RE: USE OF CITY PROPERTY ( WESTERN AND MICHIGAN ) The matter of the use of city owned property located at Western and Michigan Streets came before the Board, ln:the..past this property has been used for_rking and also as a flower stand, and the City has been requested` d--_le.ap "said property to private party for like purposes. The matter was turned over to Mr. Clem Hazinski, Traffic Engineer, to investigate and ascertainkto what use this land can be put so as not to interfere with traffic. 2-2 TRAFFIC ENGINEE_RFTRAFFIC SIGNS) Following the recommendation of the Traffic Engineer, the following installations were approved: 2 - Two H-)ur time limit signs installed at 814 S. Main Street Stop Sign installed on Sorin St., northeast corner, at St. Louis Blvd. Yield Right -of -Way sign installed on Ardmore Trail, southeast corner, at Kentucky St. Stop'- Sign installed on Ardmore Trail, northwest corner, at Kentucky St. 2 - One -Hour parking limit -'signs installed at 703 W. Calvert St. 2 - Two Hour time limit parking signs installed at 500 N. Notre Dame Avenue, alongside of 908 Sorin St. 2 One Hour time limit signs in 800 block Arnold St., alongside 1201 W. Sample St. ELECTRICAL DEPARTMENT ( ADVERTISE FOR TRUCK Njcholas Horvath, Superintendent of the Electrical Department requests permission to have advertisements placed for the purchase of a 1962 one-half Ton Truck. Permission granted. Advertisements will be placed in The South Bend Tribune and The Record on April 6, April 13. Bids will be opened on April 19, 1962. ELECTRICAL DEPARTMENT ( INSTALLATIONS Following the recommendation of the Electrical Department Superintendent, the Board approved the following installations: 1 - 4000 lumen street light in the 900 Block East Indiana Ave. 1 - 4000 lumen street light at 1110 S. 35th St. STREET LIGHT OUTAGE REPORTS Street Light Outage Reports were accepted and ordered placed on file. POLI_CE DEPARTMENT ( ATTEND MEETING ) Comes now Police Chief Harman and requests permission for Officers Robert J. Urban and Henry Kruszewski to attend a -Traffic Conference School at Purdue University from April 8 through April 15, 1962. Permission granted. SPECIAL POLICE COMMISSION A Special Police Commission for Julius Yuhouse, an employee of the City Sanitation Department was approved. Said Special Police Commission is for use at the Landfill only. Mr. Yuhouse is assigned to work at the Landfill by the Sanitation Department. APPLICATION ( POLICE DEPARTMENT ) An application for the Police Department from Commie Lee !dalls was accepted and ordered placed on file. RE UEST_ ACOUSTICON OVERMYER COMPANY ( USE OF FIRE STATIONS) A request from Harry B. Overmyer, Manager of the Acousticon Overmyer Company, informs the Board that the Acousticon International Hearing Air Co., and its dealers through -out the country are sponsoring a collection of used hearing aids to be re -conditioned by the Company at no charge and delivered to the Project Hope, a floating medical 1 I I M 4 ' center which went to South Vietnam, Peru and Indonesia last year. Ma§t 9f a he medical supplies and Doctors are provided, with the excepion of hearing aids. This Project is sponsored by People to People Health Foundation, Inc., an indipendent non-profit organization . Mr. Overmyer requests the use of fire stations as receiving depots for the used hearing aids until the end of June, 1962. The Acousticon office will collect the used aids once each week until the program closes. Permission granted.
