A regular meeting of the Board of Public Safety was held on Monday,
March 26, 1962 at 10:00 A.M. Messrs. Edwin L. Davies and Ray S.
Andrysiak were present. Minutes of the last regular meeting were
not read or approved. The Minutes will be read and approved at the
next regular meeting of the Board. Vouchers were approved and ordered
paid to the various suppliers.
INDIANA & MICHIGAN ELECTRIC COMPANY - RE: REPLACING LUMEN LIGHTS
RIVERSIDE DRIVE AT MARION STREET.
A letter from.-Ihdidn� & Michigan -Electric Company, signed by Joseph A.
Braunsdorf requesting the removal of five underground 1000 lumen lights
on Riverside Drive at north of Marion Streets was examined by the Board.
The Indiana & Michigan Electric Company proposes to install in their place
two 6000 lumen overhead lights. The letter also points out that the
present lights were installed in 1909 and, at the present time, four are
not working and replacement is exorbitant. These five lights ark now
billed at $2.000 per month each and the two new lights would be bhlled
at $3.65 each, thus saving the city $2.70 per month. r
The proposal, after examination, was approved.
TRAFFIC ENGINEER TRAFFIC SIGNS
The following installations, following the recommendation of Clem
Hazinski, Traffic engineer were approved:
2 - 2 Hour signs installed on south side of 1000 block of West Sample
Street.
ELECTRICAL DEPARTMENff__�_STREET LIGHT'S
Following the recommendation of Nicholas Horvath, Superintendent of
the Electrical Department, the following installations were approved:
1 - 4000 lumen street light at corner of Fellows and Walter Streets
1 - 4000 lumen street light at 4328 E. Fellows Street
1 - 4000 lumen street light at Spokane Lane and Portland Lane
1 - 4000 lumen street light at Arcadia Avenue and Portland Lane
ELECTRICAL DEPARTMENT ( PETITIONS FOR STREET LIGHT'S
The following Petitions for street lights were referred to the`;=lectrical
Department for investigation and recommendation:
Street light in the 11 hundred block South 35th Street from
Pole #285-343
Street light at Bridge, 900 E. Indiana Avenue, north side.
STREET LIGHT' OUTAGE REPORTS
Street Light Outage Reports were accepted and ordered placed on file.
POLICE DEPARTMENT ( APPLICATION)
The following application,_ for the Police Department was accepted and
ordered placed on file: Cornell:£ug6he James.
SPECIAL POLICE COMMISSIONS AND BONDS
The following Special Police Commissions and Bonds for employees of
The South Bend Tribune were approved and ordered placed on file: Raymond
Fry and Albert J. Dunkel.
FIRE DEPARTMENT APPLICATION
An application from Cris Deon Townsend for the South Bend Fire Department
was accepted and ordered placed on file.
BUILDING DEPARTMENT ( ANNUAL REPORT
The Annual Report for the year 1961 from the -Building Department was
accepted and ordered placed on file.
BUILDING DEPARTMENT- SUB -STANDARD DIVISION HEARING
Comes now John Grabarz, Director of Sub -Standard Division of the
Building Department and informed the Board that the owner of property
located at 325 S. Camden has started demolition of the structure.
Mr. Grabarz informed the Board further that a bid had been received
for such demolition ands under the circumstances, requested a postponement
of this hearing and letting of the bid in order to ascertain whether
the owner would continue with the demolition himself.
Permission granted. Case continued until 30 days from date.
The bid received for the above demolition is as follows:
A.J. Demolition Company, Inc.
318 O'Brien St.
South Bend, Ind.
Demolition of structure located at 325 S. Camden - $150.00
In accordance with the above request, the bid will be Occopted and placed
on file until April 25, 1962.
TRAFFIC ENGINEER PROGRESS REPORT RAILROAD SURVEY
Comes now Clem Hazinski with a Progress Report on the railroad survey
in connection with the track repair in the City. Mr. Hazinski reported
that he had received replies from the New Jersey Railroad, the Grand
Trunk, the South Shore and the Michigan Central Division of the New
York Central Railroad.
The South Shore has already started patching their tracks and the
Michigan Central Division of the New York Central Railroad intends to
do a permanent repair on Niles Avenue, beginning April 15, 1962.
Mr. Hazinski reported that, to this date, he has had no word from the
New York Central or the Pennsylvania Railroads concerning his request.
CERTIFICATE OF INSURANCE ( NEWBILL BAR-B-QUE PIT)
A Certificate of Insurance indemnifying the City of South Bend from
Mr. Newbill in accordance with instructions of the Board at the time
he was given permission to build Bar-b-que Pit at•1233-35 W. Washington,
was submitted to the Board. Said insurance indemnifies the city in case
of accident, because of an overhang at the Bar-b-que Pit.
The Certificate was accepted and ordered placed on file.
There being no further business to come before the Board, the meeting
was adjourned at 11:00 A.M.
