A regular meeting of the Board of Public Safety was held on Tuesday,
February 13, 1962 at 10:00 A.M. CST. All members were present. Minutes
of the last regular meeting and the special meeting were read and approved.
Vouchers were approved and ordered paid to the various suppliers.
ELECTRICAL DEPARTMENT ( PERMISSION TO ADVERTISE FOR TRUCK)
Comes now Nicholas Horvath, Superintendent of the Electrical Department,
and requests permission to advertise for bids for a one-half Ton Cab
& Chassis Truck with Utility Body.
Permission granted and bdvertisements will be placed in The South Bend
Tribune and The Record on February 169 February 23. Sealed bids will
be opened on February 269 1962 at 10:00 A.M.
ELECTRICAL DEPARTMENT ( PETITIONS FOR STREET LIGHFS
A Petition signed by resigents of Phillips Street requesting a street
light on Phillipa Street between Western Avenue and Huron Street and
' a Petition from residents of Fisher Street and surrounding area,
requesting a street light on Fisher between Olive and Meade Streets
were referred to the Electrical Department for investigation and
recommendation.
STREET LIGHT OUTAGE REPORTS
Street Light Outage Reports were accepted and ordered placed on file.
BUILDING DEPARTMENT (RE: NEW FIRESTONE BUILDING - APPROVAL OF PLANS
Comes now Verner Lane, Building Commissioner, and requests the Board
to approve plans for a new Firestone Building to be erected on the
Southeast corner of South Michigan and Bronson Street.
Mr. Lane informed the Board that his department had approved the plans
and recommended that the plans be approved.
He further requested permission of the Board to allow the erection of
a canopy to extend over the sidewalk.
Permission granted, provided insurance is secured, indemnifying the
City of South Bend for $1009000 per individual accident, $300,000
aggregate accident and $50,000 property damage. Certificates of
Insurance are to be forwarded to the Office of the Board and placed
on file and are to be renewed each year. It is further ordered that
all provisions of the Building Department be met.
BUILDING DEPARTMENT ( RE: WYMAN'S REMODELING - BARRICADE SIDEWALK)
Comes now Verner Lane, Building Commissioner, and requests permission
to allow the sidewalk in front of Wyman's Department Store to be
barricaded at the time of the remodeling of the store.
The Board directed Mr. Lane to coordinate this matter with Mr. Andrysiak,
City Engineer, and Mr. Hazinski, Traffic Engineer, and report findings
after examination, to the Board.
BUILDING DEPARTMENT - SUB -STANDARD DIVISION ( HEARINGS)
Comes now Verner Lane, in the absence of Mr. Grabarz, and reports to
the Board that Miss Daar, owner of property located at 513-515 Pennsylvania
Avenue had failed to appear before the Board as directed to show cause
why the above -mentioned property had not been brought up to standard.
Mr. Lane reported that Miss Daar had received a Certified letter, return
receipt requested and returned.
Under these circumstances, Mr. Lane requested permission to proceed with
Condemnation Order and to advertise for bids to demolish the houses.
After hearing the evidences the Board directed Mr. Lane to proceed with
such Condemnation Order and to advertise for bids to demolish. However,
the Board further directed Mr. Lane to so notify Miss Daar of these
intentions.
SPECIAL POLICE BONDS
Renewals". of the following Bonds for Special Police officers were
examined and approved and ordered placed on file: ,
A Bond for all Bendix Corporation employees, acting as Special
Police with a list of such employees attached.
A Bond for Milton A. Gilbert who is employed by the Humane Society.
A Bond for John J. Horan who is with the U.S. Army as a Recruiting
Officer.
There being no further business to come before the Board, the meeting
was adjourned at 10:30 A.M.
