A regular meeting of
the Board of Public
Safety was held on Monday,
January 22, 1962 at
10:00 A.M. CST. All
members were present. Minutes
of the last regular
meeting were read and
approved. Vouchers were
approved and ordered
paid to the various
suppliers.
BUILDING DEPARTMENT
( ATTEND CONFERENCE
Comes now Verner Lane,
Building Department Commissioner, and requests
permission to attend
a Building Officials
Conference of America symposium
to be held at Forest
Products Laboratory,
Madison, Wisconsin on January
28, 1962. Mr. Lane
is to be a speaker at
the conference.
Permission granted' to attend conference from January 28 to February 1.
BUILDING DEPARTMENT RE: HOUSE MOVES REGULATION
With reference to regulations concerning notification of parties involved
in house moves, At. Verner land requested permission to notify such
parties of an impending house mgve by a personal call by a member of the
X Buildini Department as well as by certified mail, return receipt
4r requested. This would, in many cases, be more convenient and more
economical.
Permission granted.
BUILDING DEPARTMENT - SUB -STANDARD DIVISION ( HEARINGS)
Comes now John Grabarz, Director of the Sub -Standard Division of the
Building Department and Nicholas Chollis, attorney for owner of property,
commonly known as 512 W. Washington Avenue. Mr. Grabarz reported that
the property had not been torn down. Mr. Chollis reported that he was
serving as guardian for owner who was incompetent and that Guardianship
papers were in the process of being completed.
A continuance was granted for 60 days.
With reference to a hearing on a case involving property located at
1705 S. Jackson, owned by Judge Lloyd Allen and Harry Taylor, a request
to continue this hearing until March 26, 1962 was granted.
A request to continue a hearing on property located at 2124 W. Washington,
owned by Mr. and Mrs. H. Rogers was granted.
Case continued until March 26, 1962.
A request to continue a hearing on property located at 1147 N. Johnson
Street was granted.
Case continued until February 26, 1962.
BUILDING DEPARTMENT ( NEWBILL BARB-QUE PIT)
Comes now Rozell Newbill and requests permission to erect a Bar-B-Que
Pit on property located at 1233 W. Washington Avenue. Mr. Newbill
submitted a sketch showing the location of the Pit with 12" pipe
extending over city property.
After examination by the Building Department and the Board, permission
was granted, subject to Mr. Newbill securing insurance as follows:
$1009000 individual accident, $3009000 aggregate accident, $25,000
property damage, all indemnifying the City of South Bend: Mr. Newbill
was also directed to comply with all regulations of the Building Department.
TRAFFIC ENGINEER( ATTEND MEETING RE: CIVIL DEFENSE)
Comes now Clem Hazinski, Traffic Engineer, and requests permission to
attend a meeting of the Instil ute-of Traffic Engineers in Indianapolis
on January 25, 1962 and, if weather is inclement, Mr. Hazinski requests
permission to return to South Bend on January 26, 1962. The meeting
will deal with the duties of the Traffic Engineering Department in
Civil Defense.
Permission granted.
FIRE PROTECTION AGREEMENT ( PORTAGE TOWNSHIP)
An AgreeTent for Fire Protection between the City of South Bend and
Portage Township, approved by the Portage Township Advisory Board
was submitted to the Board of Public Works & Safety and approved and
ordered placed on file.
ELECTRICAL DEPARTMENT
Following the recommendation of Nicholas Horvath, Superintendent of the
Electrical Department the following changes were ordered:
Remove 1 - 1,000 Lumen underground light at St. Vincena acid
Niles Avenue, then install 1 - 4000 lumen overhead light at
this location.
Remove 1 - 1000 lumen underground light at North Shore Drive
and Lafayette4 then install 1 4000 lumen overhead light
at this location.
STREET LIGHT OUTAGE REPORTS
Street Light Outage Reports were accepted and ordered placed on file.
POLICE DEPARTMENT RESIGNATION ( BOROWSKI)
A request from Captain Charles C. Borowskip South Bend Police Department,
to the Board to accept his resignation, effective February 28, 19629
after 22 years, 3 months and 4 days of oontinuous service on the
Department, was granted;' by the Board in accordance with Captain
Borkowski's request.
APPLICATIONS POLICE DEPARTMENT
The following applications for the Police Department were accepted and
ordered placed on file: Gary L. MacLaren, Michael Geissel Harman.
FIRE DEPARTMENT LETTER OF OOMI&L'IMENT _
A letter of compliment to the Fire Chief from Mr. Judd Leighton compliment-
ing the Department for the splendid work done at the time of a fire in
Mr. Leighton's resident, was submitted to the Board, examined and ordered
placed on file.
CIVIL DEFENSE MINUTES
A copy of the Minutes of the St. Joseph County Civil Defense Advisory
Council was accepted by the Board, examined and ordered placed on file.
There being no further business to come before the Board, the meeting was
adjourned at 11:15 A.M. /
