HomeMy WebLinkAbout12/30/68 Board of Public Works MinutesDecember 30, 1968 A regular meeting of the Board of Public Works & Safety met at 10:00 A.M. on December 30, 1968, with all members present. The minutes of the previous meeting were reviewed and approved. APPLICATIONS - FIRE DEPARTMENT The application of Jerome Richard Swartz for appointment to the Fire Department was received and referred to the Personnel Department for further processing. APPLICATIONS - POLICE DEPARTMENT The application of Jerry James Umsted for appointment to the South Bend Police Department was received and referred to the Personnel Department for further processing. RETIREMENT FROM FIRE DEPARTMENT - THOMAS J. QUIRK (DISABILITY) The application of Thomas J. Quirk for retirement from the Fire Department effective January 1, 1969, on account of disability as the result of being seriously burned in his home on December 25, 1967, together with medical examiner's report was presented to the Board by Chief Zurat, and upon motion made, seconded and unanimously carried, said disability retirement was approved by the Board. V APPOINTMENTS - FIRE DEPARTMENT Upon recommendation of Fire Chief Joseph L. Zurat, the following appointments to the South Bend Fire Department :effectiJe:January 1, 1969, upon motion made, seconded and unanimously carried, were approved by the Board: James Donald Dowdy Joseph O'Connor Daniel S. O'Neill Richard Paul Burnoski REQUEST TO ATTEND ANTI -CRIME CONFERENCE - POLICE DEPARTMENT Upon motion made, seconded and unanimously carried, the Board approved the request of Chief Thomas McNaughton for Chief McNaughton and Uniform Division Chief Glenn Terry to attend the Governor's Indiana Anti -Crime conference January 7 and 8, 1969, in Indianapolis. APPOINTMENT OF SPECIAL POLICE OFFICER - GENE DAVIS Upon the recommendation of Chief of Police Thomas McNaughton, the Board approved the.appointment of Gene Davis, Bendix employee, as a special police officer. APPOINTMENTS - POLICE DEPARTMENT Upon motion made, seconded and carried, the Board approved the following appointments to the South Bend Police Department, effective January 1, 1969: Robert Lee Lanschweerdt Cullen Walton, Jr. AWARD OF CONTRACT FOR TRAFFIC SIGNALS Upon the recommendatioh of the City Engineer, the Board awarded contract for traffic signals at the following intersections: 1. Ireland and York 2, Ewing and Main 3. Ironwood and Pleasant 4. Olive and Washington 5. Portage, Angela and Diamond to the Wellsbach Corporation, 445 N. Holmes Avenue, Indianapolis, Indiana, at a total price of $41,015.95. 1394 STREET LIGHT REQUEST - 621 N. ST. LOUIS STREET A letter received from D. J. Kelly, 621 N.'St. Louis Street, requesting review of denial for street light request, was read and referred to the Traffic Engineer for further study and recommendation in view of the neighborhood situation. STREET LIGHT OUTAGE REPORTS Street light outage reports for the period 12/19/68 to 12/26/68 were ordered filed. Bickel Excerpt from Minutes January 20, 1969 It was moved by Mr. Bickel, seconded and unanimously carried that the keeping of separate minutes for the Board of Works and for the Board of Safety be dispensed with and that the minutes for the Board of Public Works and Safety be combined in one record effective January 6, 1969.
