September 23, 1968.
The regular meeting of the Board of Safety met at 10:00 A.M. on September
23, 1968. Present were James A. Bickel and Lloyd S. Taylor. Mr.'Bickel
acted as Chairman of the Board.
APPLICATIONS FOR APPOINTMENT -F.rRE DEPARTMENT
The following applications for appointment to the Fire Department were
filed and referred to the Personnel Director for further processing

APPLICATIONS FOR APPOINTMENT - POLICE DEPARTMENT
The application of Darneil Lewis for appointment to the Police Department was
filed and referred to the Personnel Director .for further processing.
RETIREMENT -
FIRE CHIEF CECIL McHENRY

declaration for retirement of Fire
Chief Cecil
McHenry effective November
1, 1968, Chief McHenry having become

65 years of
age on September 9, 1968,
the age of mandatory retirement. Upon
motion made,
seconded and unanimously
carried, the Board appoved the retire-
ment of Chief
McHenry.
I.Q. TESTS FOR FIREMENIAND POLICEMEN
All applications for appointment to Fire Department and Police Department
will be reviewed by the Board.
REQUEST OF RIETH RILEY CONSTRUCTION CO., INC. TO BURN TREES AND BRUSH
The request of Rieth-Riley Construction Co., Inc., dated September 12, 1968,
for permissi-on to burn trees and brush which will be cleared in conjunction
with the construction of the new Cleveland Road Bridge over the St. Joseph
River, in the vicinity of Riverside Drive, was, on motion made, seconded
and unanimously carried, approved by the Board, upons Qa on the recommendation
of the Fire Department that the following conditions be complied with:
1. That a bulldozer and operator be available on the site
during the burning operation.
2. That full water tanker be kept on the site with hose
lines to reach fire in case of emergency.
3. That the fire is put out at the end of each working day.
STREET LIGHT REQUESTS
1. Request of Crest Manor Development Corp, 60124 Miami Road, South
Bend, Indiana, for the installation of street lights in Crest
Manor, Sections 4, 8 and 9;
for the instalation of street lighting in Fairfax Estates,
Sections 1 and Ireland Heights.
2. The request of Joseph Chrzan and 28 others for the installation
of street lights on Phillipa Street from Ford -,'to Dunham.
3. Petition of Julius Horvath and 21 others for the installation
of a street light on Illinois Street, between Ford and Huron.
4. Petition of Frank Rozmann and six others for a street light
at Hillside and Phillipa Streets.
The above petitions and requests were ordered file and referred to the
Traffic Engineering Department for investigation and recommendation.
STREET LIGHT APPROVED - MacARTHUR DRIVE
Upon the recommendation of Traffic Engineering Department, upon motion made,
seconded and unanimously carried, the Board approved the installation of a
7000 L MV street light, mid -block, in 2700-2800 MacArthur Drive. The cost
to the city will be $3.75.per month or $44.00 per year.
STREET SIGNS APPROVED
Upon motion made, seconded and apanfmously carried, the Board approved the
recommendation of the Traffic Engineer for the installation of the follow-
ing street signs:
40 MPH Speed limit signs on Jackson Road, between York and Ironwood.
30 MPH speed limit sign at 414 Marion Street.
STOP sign and post on the northeast corner of Jefferson and Lake.
In the 100 block of W. Ewing --Post Office Sub -Station A, at
2220 S. Main Street, posting as follows:
U. S. Mail Truck Loading - 6:00 A.M. to 10:00 A.M.
2 Hour Parking Limit - 10:00 A.M. to 6:00 P.M.
SPECIAL POLICE OFFICERS' BONDS
The following special police bonds were approved and ordered filed:
On behalf of Olen E. Lindsey , provided -by Henry Getz, agent for
the period 9/13/68 to 9/13/69.
On behalf of John Kent Stephenson, provided, -by i4enry Getz, agent for
the period 9/13/68 to 9/13/69.
STREET LIGHT OUTAGE REPORTS
Street light outage reports for the period 9/12/68 to 9/20/68 were filed.
There being no further business to come before the Board, the meeting adjourned
at 11:20 A.M.
