A regular meeting of the Board of Public Safety convened at 10:00 A.M. with members
Lloyd S. Taylor and Arthur W. Frisk, present. The minutes of the two previous meet-
ings were reviewed and approved.
FIRE DEPARTMENT
Reguest to Attend State Fire Academy Colpmbvs,, Indiana
Upon motion made, seconded and carried, the Board approved the request of Chief McHenry
for Lieutenant Carl Lederer to attend the State Fire Academy meeting in Columbus,
Indiana on Tuesday, September 24, 1968.
Retirement from Fire -Department - JAMES A. HUNPBREY
Upon the recommendation of Chief of Fire Department Cecil C. McHenry, upon motion made,
seconded and carried, the Board approved the retirement of Fireman James A. Humphrey,
effective September 13, 1968, and having served more than twenty years,

the Board and referred to the Personnel Director for processing.

Request of Urban Redevelopment to Burn Structures Scheduled For Demolition
V Upon motion made, seconded and carried, the request of Urban Redevelopment for the Fire
Department to burn structures scheduled for demolition in the Industrial Expansion pro-
gram, project area Ind• R-56 was approved by the Board.
Request for Permission to Burn Brush and Undergrowth in Cleveland Road Bridge Area
The request of RIETH-RILEY for permission to burn undergrowth and brush near the Cleve-
land Road Bridge was received and filed and referred to Fire Prevention Bureau of the
Fire Department for study and recommendations to be given at the Board's next meet-
ing September 23, 1968.
Request for Permission to Burn Undergrowth on Lot at Jefferson & Ed FIRST
CHRISTIAN CHURCH
The request of the Maintenance Supt. of the church, Mr. Hill, 320 S. Main Street on
behalf of the First Christian Church, to burn shrubbery, etc., on the church lot at
Jefferson and Eddy streets was denied upon the recommendation of the Fire Prevention
Bureau as it is too close to other structures. Chief Wm. Diedrich of the Bureau is
to communicate the Board's decision to Mr. Hill.
Inspector Terry reported there is already a police officer on duty in the City Court
and the officer assigned to the street patrol and stationed on the corner of LaSalle
and Michigan is also responsible. His report was received and filed by the Board
upon his statement that these two officers should be sufficient and any disturbance
should be called to their attention and any neglect of duty on part of these officers
should be reported to him.
Application for appointment as Special Police Officer - STEVE OLAWSKI, LOUIS H. WILLIAMS
and JOHN KEY
The applications for appointment as special police officer of Steve Olawski for St.
Joseph Hospital, South Bend, Louis H. Williams for the Bendix Corporation and John
Key, also for the Bendix Corporation were approved by the Board.
Continuation Certificate issued by Western Surety on behalf of Russell A. Jester,
Special Police Officer to continue his bond to October, 1969.
Appointments to Police Department - THEODORE C. NAJDEK+ JR.
Upon the recommendation of Chief of Police Thomas H. McNaughton and Assistant Chief
Loren Bussert and due investigation by the Board, the appointment of Theodore C.
Najdek, Jr. Was made to the department, effective September 16, 1968.

Police Chief Thomas H. Me Naughton requests the transfer of $3,000.00 from Account
PT11 (services personal) to Account P-252 (repair of equipment), said request being
made for anticipated charges for repairs of equipment. Upon motion made, seconded �~.J
and carried, the Board approved the request for the preparation of.an ordinance for �.... .
the consideration of the Common Council, and the matter is referred to the Legal Depart-
ment for the preparation of an ordinance.
Statistical Report for August, 1968 - Police Department
Statistical report of the department for August, 1968, was reviewed and filed.
Traffic Reuort for month of August. 1968 - Police-Dem-artment
Traffic report for month of Au#ust, 1968, was reviewed and filed.

Street lighting Approved - CREST MANOR
Upon motion made, seconded and carried the Board, upon the recommendation of the
Engineering Department, approved installation of lighting in Crest Manor, 4th, 8th and
9th additional additions and South East Estates (as per plan submitted). Cost to be
$432.60 per year.
Petition for a street light in front of 621 N. St. Jouis, aigned by Warren Romine and
other residents, was filed with the Board and referred to the City Traffic Engineer
for investigation and recommendation.
Mrs. Allen appeared before the Board and inquired on behalf of Fred Craven why the new
8zaaxi Xz&' .I i ig adxax truck in the Fire Department was being used exclusively
for the boat which is seldom used while the old trailer is just sitting idly by. It
was suggested by Mrs. Allen that the truck was needed for maintenance. The City En-
gineer suggested that the wheel base on the trucks used in the past for the boat were
too short also there was no permanent truck used for the life saving rig and one had
to be located each time it was taken out.

Mrs. Allen also request the installation of a stop sign at Parkovash and Marquette.
Her request was referred to the Engineering Department for investigation and survey
to determine the need of traffic control signage at this intersection.
STREET LIGHT OUTAGE REPORTS for the period 9-5-68 to 9-13-68 were ordered filed.
There being no further business to come before the Board; the meeting adjourned at
110:00 A.M.
