September 3, 1968.
A regular meeting of the Board of Public Works & Safety convened at 10:00 A.M.
on September 3, 1968, with Lloyd S. Taylor and James A. Bickel present. Mr. Taylor
acted as chairman of the meeting.
RETURN TO POLICE DEPARTMENT - CAPTAIN LOREN BUSSERT
Captain Loren Bussert, having been on leave of absence for one year.attending
the John Jay College of Criminal Justice in New York City, having completed his
studies and having attained a master's degree in Police Administration, was
welcomed by the Board upon his return.
RETIREMENT FROM FIRE DEPARTMENT - DANIEL RADECKI
Upon the recommendation of Fire Chief McHenry, the -Board accepted and approved
the application and declaration for retirement of Dan Redecki, effective 8?8/68,
Mr. Radecki having been appointed 12/16/47 and having served with the Fire De-
partment 20 years and eight months.
REQUEST TO CHANGE AGE LIMITS FOR APPOINTMENT TO POLICE DEPARTMENT
Chief of PolA ce Thomas McNaughton requests the present age requirements of 21 to 31
years for appointment to the South Bend Police Department be changed so that the
requirement will be from 21 to 35 years to conform to the Statutes. Upon motion
made, seconded and carried, the matter was referred to the Legal Department.
TRAFFIC REPORT FOR JULY, 1968 = POLI:CE DEPARTMENT
The traffic report for July, 1968, Pol-ic&.-Department, was reviewed and ordered filed,
PETITION FOR FOUR-WAY STOP AT DIAMOND AND VAN BUREN - DENIED
Upon the recommendation of the Traffic Engineering Department, after due in-
vestigation, upon motion .made, seconded and carried, the Board denied the
petition of Thord T. Hall and some 60 others for a four way stop sign at the
intersection of Diamond and Van Burean Streets. The report of the Traffic
Engineer was ordered filed and the Clerk instructed to notify the first two
petitioners of the action of the Board, and to request the Police Department to
give some surveillance to the speeding on Diamond Avenue.
INSTALLATION OF STREET SIGNS
The, following street signs having been installed by the Traffic Engineering
Department, are as follows:
Two 30 MILES PER HOUR speed limit signs on Diamond Avenue - 1225 Diamond
and 1014 Diamond Avenue
SPEED LIMIT SIGNS on Diamond Avenue #1 LP at 901 Diamond (face north)
#2 UP at 740 Diamond (face south).
STOP signs on Dayton at Vernon, and STOP signs on Vernon at Bowman.
REQUEST OF ST. JOSEPH HOSPITAL TO CANCEL SPECIAL POLICE OFFICERS' BOND
The request of O'Rourke & Maroney, Inc., Fort Wayne Bank Bldg., Fort Wayne:,. Indiana,
for the cancellation of special police officers' bond carried by St.. Joseph Hospital.
811 E. Madison Street, South Bend, Indiana, as of its anniversary date of 9/27/68,
is received and referred to the Legal Department for determination. The reason
given for the request being that the St. Joseph Hospital will require the
officer to assume this responsibility.
STREET LIGHT OUTAGE REPORTS FOR THE PERIOD 8/22/68 to 8/30/68 were ordered filed.
There being no further business to come before the Board, the meeting adjourned
at 11:15 A.M.
