A regular meeting of the Board of Public Works & Safety met at 10:00 A.M.
on August 5, 1968, with all members present. The minutes of the last
meeting were reviewed and approved.
RETIREMENT FROM FIRE DEPARTMENT - ANTHONY C. KOVATCH
Upon the recommendation of Fire Chief McHenry, the Board accepted and
approved the application and declaration for retirement of Anthony C.
Kovatch effective September 2, 1968, Mr. Kovatch having been appointed
February 16, 1948, and having served more than 20 years.
NOTICE OF RETIREMENT FROM FIRE DEPARTMENT - FIRE CHIEF CECIL McHENRY
Notice of retirement September 9, 1968, or as soon thereafter as a
successor is appointed,.was filed with the Board by Chief McHenry. The
Board expressed its appreciation of the long service of Chief McHenry
and regret at his coming retirement.
FIRE PROTECTION AGREEMENT - PORTAGE TOWNSHIP
Communication from James A. Bickel, City Controller, regarding the Fire
protection agreement with Portage Township was read and ordered filed.
Mr. Frisk will write the Porta§e Township Trustees to determine their
intentions as to future fire protection for Portage. Township outside the
city limits of South Bend.
APPLICATIONS - POLICE DEPARTMENT
The following applications for appointment to the South Bend Police Depart-
ment were filed with the Board and referred to the Personnel Director for
further processing:
Melvin Thomas Chrapliwy
Gregory Oren Dawson
Gerald Joseph Grontkowski
Robert Wm. Peterson
POLICE DEPARTMENT TRAFFIC REPORT FOR JULY, 1968
Traffic arrest report f6r July, 1968, by the Police Department was reviewed
and ordered filed.
SPECIAL POL ICE`'OFF ICER' S BOND
Special police officer's bond on behalf of Mozelle Toth, Mishawaka, Indiana,
employed at Robertson's, was approved by the Board.
PARKING PROHIBITED - S. CHAPIN STREET FROM WESTERN SOUTH TO R R VIADUCT
Upon the recommendation of Clem F. Hazinski, Traffic Director, the Board
approved the following:
To prohibit parking on both sides of S. Chapin Street, from
Western south to the Railroad viaduct, being 400 and 500 blocks
of 6outh Chapin Street.
STREET SIGNS APPROVED
Upon the recommendation of Clem F. Hazinski, Traffic Engineer, the Board
approved the following signs:
30 MPH speed limit sign -- on the southwest corner of Phillipa and
Ford. Sign to face west.
30 MPH speed limit sign -- on the northeast corner of Pulaski and
Ford. Sign to face east.
STREET LIGHT OUTAGE REPORTS
Street light outage reports from July 24, to August 2, 1968, were filed.

There being no further business to come before the Board, the meeting adjourned
at 10:55 A.M.
