July 29, 1968
A regular meeting of the Board of Public Works and Safety convened at 10:00
A.M., with all members present. The minutes of the previous meeting were
reviewed and approved.
RETIREMENTS - FIRE DEPARTMENT - STEVE OLAWSKI AND MARSHALL VANLAERE
Upon the recommendation of Fire Chief Cecil McHenry, the Board accepted and
approved the applications and declarations for retirement of the following:
Steve Olawski appointed 8/1/43. Retirement date 8/2/68.
Marshall VanLaere - aplso-inted 7/20/43. Retirement date 8/1/68
FIREMEN'S PENSION FUND - LARRY RICHARD ERNSBERGER
Notice of acceptance by the Firemen's Pension Fund of Larry Richard
Ernsberger as of August 1, 1968, the effective date of appointment to the
Fire Department, is received and filed.
REQUESTS FOR LEAVE FROM,FIRE DEPARTMENT FOR MILITARY DUTY
Upon the recommendation of Fire Chief Cecil McHenry, upon motion made,
seconded and carried, the Board approved leave for the following firemen
for summer military duty at Camp McCoy, Wisconsin:

REQUEST FOR LEAVE FROM POLICE DEPARTMENT FOR MILITARY DUTY
Upon the recommendation of Chief of Police Thomas McNaughton, upon motion
made, seconded and carried, the Board approved leave for the following
officers for summer military duty at Camp McCoy, Wisconsin:
Officer E. D. Nybo from 8/3/68 through 8/17/68

IMPROVEMENT OF HIGH STREET, FROM DONMOYER TO OAKSIDE
City Engineer Lloyd S. Taylor reports final inspection has been made on
the improvement to High Street, from Donmoyer Avenue to Oakside, and
that it conf6rms to City standards (Class C, Type IV). City Engineer
states that this street was not constructed under Barrett Law, but that
the property owners put up the money for their share of the cost.
Upon motion made, seconded and carried, the recommendation of the
City Engineer was approved by the Board, and accordingly High Street, from
Donmoyer Avenue to Oakside Street is accepted into the City street system
and placed on the City records as an improved street.
STREET LIGHT OUTAGE REPORTS for the period 7/18/68 to 7/25/68 were filed.
PROMOTIIONi,OF-,OFFtCEW: LOREN BUSSERT - POLICE DEPARTMENT
On the recommendation of Chief of Police Thomas McNaughton, upon motion
duly made, sec-nded and carried, the Board approved the promotion of
Officer Loren Bussert to the rank of Assistant Chief of the South Bend
Police Department, effective August 16, 1968, at inspector's pay.
Officer Bussert will graduate from John Jay College of Criminal Justice with
a Masters Degree on August 15, 1968, and as Assistant Chief of Police will
be in charge of the Services Division.

There being no further business to cone before the Board, the meeting adjourned
at 11:00 A.M.
