July 22, 1968.
A regular meeting of the Board of Public Works & Safety convened at 10:00
A.M. on July 22, 1968, with all members present. The minutes of the
previous meeting were reviewed and approved.
RETIREMENT FROM FIRE DEPARTMENT - CLIFTON M. COPELAND
Upon recommendation of`Fire Chief Cecil McHenry, the Board, upon motion made,
seconded and carried, approved the application and declaration for retire-
ment of Clifton M. Copeland, effective August 18, 1968, having been appointed
on August 16, 1968, and having completed 22 years of service.
REQUEST FOR MILITARY LEAVE - POLICE DEPARTMENT
The following requests for military leave were submitted by Chief of Police
Thomas McNaughton and, upon motion made, seconded and carried, were approved
by the Board:

REQUEST FOR MILITARY LEAVE
- TRAFFIC ENGINEERING
The request of Ralph Wadzinski, Assistant Director of Traffic Engineering,
for military leave to attend summer training from July 28, 1968 until
August 11, 1968, was, upon motion made, seconded and carried, approved by
the Board.
RESIGNATION FROM POLICE DEPARTMENT - EDWIN C. BYRD
The request of Edwin C. Byrd to resign from the Police Department, effective
July 31, 1968, in order to accept employment with the Federal Government,
upon motion made, seconded and carried, was approved,,byrthe Board.
FOUR WAY STOP SIGN - JACKSON AND YORK ROADS
Upon the recommendation of the Traffic Engineering Department, upon motion
made, seconded and carried, the Board approved the installation of a four-way
stop at the intersection of Jackson and York Roads, presently controlled by
stop signs on York Road only.
STREET SIGNS APPROVED
Upon recommendation of the Traffic Engineering Department, upon motion made,
seconded and carried, the Board approved the installation of the following
street signs:
The sign "NO PEDESTRIANS OR BIKES ALLOWED" - as necessary on Chapin
Street at LaSalle; on Chapin at Colfax; on Washington and Chapin; on
Chapin at Scott; on Chapin at Oak Street; and on Chapin at Lincolnway West.
The sign "STOP" - Irvington on Rush; on Rush at Fairview; on Rush at
Victoria; and on Rush at Eckman.
STREET LIGHTS APPROVED
Upon the recommendation of`the Traffic Engineering Department, the installation
of the following street lights, on motion made, seconded and carried, was approved
by the Board:

1400 block Sorin Street - a 4000 L, OH, WP street light.
2200 and 2300 block Rockne Drive (midblock) - a 4006 L, OH, WP
street light.
3300 and 3400 Kent Lane (midblock) (on existing pole) - 4000
L, OH street light.
Corby at Whitehall (a collector street) (on existing pole)
a 4000 L, OH street light.
Intersection of N-S alley between Leland and Scott Streets
(on existing pole) in Kizer Court - a 4000 L, OH street light.
The cost to the City would be five lights at $3.15 per unit per month, or
$15.75 per month, or $189.00 per year.
STREET LIGHTS APPROVED
Upon the recommendation of the Traffic Engineering Department, upon motion,
made, seconded and carried, the following lighting was approved by the Board:
Walnut Street (Napier to Fassnacht)
Existing: 14 - 4,000 L OH Total 56,000 L Inc. $ 529.20 per yr.
Proposed: 16 - 209000 L MV OH Total 320,000 L MV - $1,027.20 per yr.
Additional cost for 264,000 additional lumens - $ 498.00 per yr..
Washington (Chapin to Olive)
Existing: 21 - 6,000 L OH
8 4,000 L OH Total 178,000 L Inc. $1,330.20 per yr.
2 - 10,000 L UG
Proposed: 42 - 20,000 L.M.V.OH Total 840,000 L MV $3,420.00 per yr.
Additional cost for 662,000 additional lumens - $2,089.80 per yr.
POLICE TRAFFIC REPORT FOR JUNE 1968.
Monthly traffic 'report of the Police Department for June, 1968, was filed.
STREET LIGHT OUTAGE REPORTS
Street light outage reports for the period 7/11/68 to 7/19/68 were filed.
