A regular meeting of the Board of Public Works and Safety convened at 10:00 A.M.
on March 18, 1968. The minutes of the previous meeting were reviewed and approved.
PROMOTIONS - POLICE ".DEPARTMENT
The recommendations of Police Chief McNaughton for the following promotions:
Sergeant Frank Arsenault to Captain of the Juvenile Bureau,
Robert Bejma to the'rank of Sergeant, and
Joseph Radecki to the rank of Sergeant,
upon motion duly made, seconded and carried were approved effective as of
March 16, 1968.
PROMOTIONS - FIRE DEPARTMENT
The recommendation of Fire Chief McHenry for the promotion of`Lieutenant
William Schmidt and for the promotion of Private Carl Zwierzynski were con-
sidered, and, upon motion duly made, seconded and unanimously carried,
promotions as follows were approved by the Board:
L<beutenant William Schmidt to the rank of Captain, and
Private Carl Zwierzynski to the rank of Lieutenant,
such promotions to be effective as of March 16, 1968.
APPOINTMENTS - POLICE DEPARTMENT
After due investigation and upon the recommendation of Chief of Police
McNaughton, the following appointments to the South Bend Police Department
were made, effective as of March 18, 1968:
Edwin Carrol Byrd - 288 S. Francis Street, South Bendir,t;ndiana
and, effective as of March 16, 1968:
James Arthur Grummell - 1146 Cleveland Avenue, South Bend, Indiana
Woodrow Turner Miller - 1113 W. Grace Street, South Bend, Indiana
Ernest Duane Nybo - 55555 Grandview Avenue, South Bend, Indiana
Gerald Anthony Weger - 1022 West Rose Street, South Bend, Indiana
Thomas Dutrieux - 7352 N. Wilber Street, South Bend, Indiana
REQUESTS FOR STREET LIGHTS
The following requests for street lights were filed and referred to the
Traffic Engineer:
1. Hildreth Street on the existing pole at the alley, between Oakland
and Clover Streets, on the petition of John L. Overholt and six others
dated 2/28/68.
2. Sylvan Glen Street and Winding Wood Drive - on the petition oifPearl
Phillip and 15 others, under date of March 12, 1968.
3. Main and Navarre - Request of Memorial Hospital dated March 13, 1968.
4. Court Street, midway"between Navarre and Bartlett - Request of Mem
5. 808 Cushing , mid block on alley - on the petition of Carl D. Tuveson
and 13 others, dated 3/15/68.
REQUEST FOR STREET LIGHT DENIED - REAR OF 615 E. BROADWAY
Alley intersection in rear of 615 E. Broadway, on the petition of Mrs. Kelsey Critton
2/5/68 has been investigated and traffic engineer, under da to of 3/11/68,
reports as follows:
"An investigation made by this Department for a street light�irostallation
at -An alley intersection revealed that both alleys seemed uninhabited.
It has been the practice of the Board not to install street lights in
uninhabited alleys or courts."
Request is therefore denied, and the Clerk is ordered to so advise the petitioner.
PETITIONS FOR STREET LIGHTS APPROVED
1. Kerslake Court, middle of the street - on the petition of L. E. Luke
filed with the Board 9/11/67.
2. 1000-1100 Block of Bryan Street - one at 1014 and 1018 Bryan and one
at 1110-1114 Bryan, on the petition submitted late in 1967.
3. 1700 block of Southwood - on the petitionsubmitted the latter half
of 1967. The light to be installed at the E.P.L. of 1709 Southwood.
APPLICATIONS - POLICE DEPARTMENT
The following applications for employment with the Police Department were
received and filed:

APPLICATIONS - FIRE DEPARTMENT
The following applications for employment with the Fire Departmenr were
received and filed:

Robert Eugene Maciejewski
SPECIAL POLICE - TORRINGTON COMPANY
Letter from Ketchen Brothers Insurance enclosing current list of special police
for Torrington Company received and filed.
STATISTICAL REPORT - POLICE DEPARTMENT
The monthly report of the Police Department for February, 1968, was received
and filed.
STREET LIGHT OUTAGE REPORTS
Street light outage reports for the period 3/7/68 to 3/15/68 were filed.
