HomeMy WebLinkAbout05/16/66 Board of Public Works MinutesMay 16, 1966 The regular meeting of the Board of Public Works and Safety was called to order at 10:00 A. M. on May 16, 1966 with all members present. The minutes of the previous meeting were read and accepted. TRAFFICI: ENGINEERING DEPARTMENT - SIGNS The Traffic Engineering Department that the following traffic signs be approved by the Board: 1. Change the Time Limit at 116 E. Tutt Street from two hour to 30 minute. 2. Stop Signs & Posts on Brookton at Byron. TRAFFIC ENGINEERING DEPARTMENT - STOP SIGNS REMOVED A recommendation from Mr. Clem Hazinski, Traffic Director that the stop signs on Donmoyer at Miami and on Irvington at Miami be removed. These intersections have been signalized with overhead interconnected traffic signals. The effective opera tion date is May 16, 1966. _TRAFFIC ENGINEERING DEPAR MENT - INSTALLATION OF PARKING METERS WESTERN AND MAIN V Clem Hazinski, Traffic Director, has recommended that Parking Meters be installed at the following locations to replace three o f those authoted removed at Western and Main, southeast quadrant: Twonneters between the two radii on the south side of Western Avenue just east of main St. One Meter between the two radii on the east side of Main Street just south of Western Avenue. The Board approved the two preceding recommendations. and directed the Secretary to notify the Parking Meter department on the latter. POLICE DEPARTMENT - TERMINATION OF EMPLOYMENT - E. M. DERROUGH Irvin Hampton, Police Chief, submitted the resignation of E. M. Derrough, Police officer, effective 5/15/66. The following record was made by the Board: Police Officer E. M. Derrough having submitted his resignation to the Board of Safety from the Police Department, same is hereby effective May 15, 1966. Police Department PERMISSION OF EUGENE SIKORSKI TO MOVE OUTSIDE OF CITY Police Chief,: Irvin Hampton submitted a communication from Eugene Sikorski stating that he would like to move to a new home outside the City Limits . His new home will be located at 26846 State Road #2, which is 3.8 miles west of the Western City Limits. His phone number would remain the same. Eugene Sikorski has been with the police department ten years. Permission was granted --by the Board. POLICE DEPARTMENT - SPECIAL POLICE JOHN SZILAGYI An application for a Special Police Officer for the Torrington Company John Szilagyi, was submitted by the Police Department and signed by the Board. REQUEST - F. 0. P. FESTIVAL A request from the Fraxternal Order of Police St. Joseph Valley Lodge #36 Festival Committee was submitted by Officer J. Rzeszewski. They request per= mission to have a "Festival of Rides" at Marycrest Lot, 2000 Blk. Western Ave. from May 16th through May 28, 1966. They will comps with the Health Laws and have all rubbish removed afterwards. They also submitted an insurance policy in force on the above dates, covering up to $300,000 liability coverage. Permission was granted by the Board. PETITION - STREET LIGHT - ON CLYDE BETWEEN VICTORIA AND FAIRVIEW A petition from several residents on Fairview and Victoria, and also presented by Edwin Smith, Councilman, requesting a street light at Clyde at an Alley between Victoria and Fairview was prested. It was filed by the Board and directed to Mr. Euga e Radecki for' further study and recommendation.. REQUEST STREET LIGHT LANDFILL SIGHT The Sanitation Department through Lloyd Taylor City Engineer, requested that a street light be installed at the corner of Bendix Drive and Lathrop Avenue near the landfill sight,..to prevent the indiscriminate dumping of refuge at night along Lathrop Drive. The Board referred the request to the City Electrical Dept., Gehe Radecki. REPORTS - ELECTRICAL DEPARTMENT - REQUEST FOR STREET LIGHTS The Electrical Department give the following reports and recommendations on requests for street lights: Corner of Prospect and Delaware St. - The Electrical Department has made an investigation at the corner of Prospect and Delaware Streets for the installation of a street light. We find that a 4,000 lumen street light here would benefit some of the people that live near this corner. North east Corner Twvckenham Drive and Jefferson Blvd. - The Electrical Department recommends that a 21,000 lumen street light be installed at the north east corner of Twyckenham Drive and Jefferson Blvd. The reason for this change is because the light at the south west corner has been knocked down fifteen times in two years. AREA of: -diking Drive: In checking the area of viking Drive, it is recommended by this Department that four 4,000 lumen street lights be installed on Viking Drive as shown on the attached sketch. (Filed) Viking Drive is approximately 1,700 feet long, and for this reason we feel our recommendation should be approved. 936; West LaSalle Avenue • The Electrical Department recommends that a 1,000 lumen street light at 936f West LaSalle Avenue be removed, and a 6,000 lumen street light be installed north of the existing light at the northeast corner of LaSalle Avenue and Hamden Dourt. This is the area where the South Shore train makes an approach onto LaSalle Avenue and a brighter street light here would also prove to be a safety factor. The preceding recommendations were approved by the Board. STREET LIGHT OUTAGE REPORTS The street light outage reports were approved and ordered filed by the Board. APPLICATIONS - FIRE DEPARTMENT An application for the Fire Department from Joseph Fredrich Runsberger and one from John Edward McCallister, were approved by the Board. CHANGE OF LOCATION:- F. 0. P. FESTIVAL A change of location for the F. 0. P. Festival was approved by members of the Board on May, 19, 1966. The location will be changed from the Marycrest lot to the South West corner of Ewing Avenue and Main Streets. 1 1 The New Mission Baptist Church, headed by Rev. V. W. Nelson, Pastor, has requested permission to have a fund drive for six months. The drive will be held in' South Bend and they will solicit, Industrial firms, grocery stores and any peop&e that would be interested in donating. Those soliciting will be Mrs. Lillie Kirt, Mrs. Mary Turner, and Rev. Nelson. They will be identified with the petition or copy. The permission was granted. The Secretary will notify police of permission. PERMISSION TO ADVERTISE - FIRE DEPARTMENT - FIRE HOSE A request from Cecil C. McHe pz7n, Fire Chief to advertise for Fire hose was granted by the Board. This request will be advertised on May 20 and May 27 in the South Bend Tribune and the Tri-County News and bids will be taken on June 6. There being no further business, the meeting was adjourned.
