HomeMy WebLinkAbout02/21/66 Board of Public Works Minutes156 February 21, 1966 A regular meeting of the Board of Public Safety was held on Monday, February 21, 1966 at 10:00 A.M. Messrs. Robert J. DuComb and James A. Bickel were present. Minutes of the last regularmeeting were read and approved. Vouchers were approved and ordered paid to the various suppliers. PERMISSION TO ADVERTISE: FIRE DEPARTMENT & POLICE DEPARTMENT UNIFORMS Permission was granted to the Fire Department and the Police Department to advertise for uniforms and uniform equipment. Sealed bids will be opened and considered on March 7, 1966 at 10:00 A.M. APPOINTMENT: POLICE DEPARTMENT ( STEPBEN M. SWARD i Stephen M. Sward having filed his application for appointment to the South Bend Police Department arid'-the"Ch of :'of the Police Department, Irvin C. Ha*ton, having informed the Board that the applicant has. qualified by physical and mental examinations and in all other matters is a fit and proper person to be appointed to the Police Department, said Stephen M. Sward is hereby appointed as a member of the Police Department, effective February 14, 1966, subject to the usual probationary rules. BUILDING DEPARTMENT: SUB -STANDARD DIVISION ( AWARD BID ) With reference to property located at 616 Fellows Street, after study of the bids received, it was the decision of the Board to award the bid to A & J Demolition with the understanding that it the demolition of this structure was not accomplished within the specified time for such demolition, A & J Demolition would forfeit any rights to further consideration for bid awards from the City of South Bend. SUB -STANDARD DIVISION ( HEARINGS )- ADVERTISE FOR DEMOLITION BIDS Mr. Liszewski informed the Board that property located at 2207 Merry Street, owned by Raebhel Haithkox, c/o Lambie Nursing Home, is in very bad condition. Mrs. Lambie appeared before the Board to advise that the owner could not appear and also informed the Board that this property was now with the Welfare Department. Mr. Liszewski requested permission to advertise for bids for demolition. Property is presently posted. Permission granted. With reference to property located at 2702 Elwood Avenue, which is part of the Defreese Estate, Mr. Liszewski requested permission to advertise for bids for demolition. Permission granted. CCIV➢.'LAINT: PROHIBITION OF PARKING ( WESTERN AVENUE ) Councilman Muszynski appeared before the Board to object to the proposed prohibition of parking on Western Avenue and advise the Board that if the ban on parking is adopted, he will submit a petition signed by many residents in the effected area who .are strenuously objecting to this proposed plan. After hearing Councilman Muszynski, the Board advised him that the matter will be continued until Lloyd S. Taylor, City Engineer, who is presently out of the City, has returned since his department is more thoroughly familiar with,the details of the proposed plan. 1 1 TRAFFIC SIGN INSTALLATIONS APPROVED The following traffic sign installations were approved by the Board: 1. One Hour Time Limit signs in front of 543 Lincoln Way East (Silvercup Bakery) 2 Stop Sign and post at exit of Water Works Station at 915 S. Olive St. SPECIAL POLICE: TORRINGTON ( REVISED SCHEDULE ) Torrington Company filed a Revised Schedule of Special Police in their employ. These employees are covered by a blanket bond: Frank Skibinski Edward T. Wagnerowski Frank Sochocki, Jr. Andrew S. Konya Richard J. Zwyslo Stanley V. Grayzck Raymond Harold Durham The Board approved the revised schedule and ordered same placed on file. v SPECIAL POLIO: ( R. G. POWERS A. D. T i The Board approved a Special Police Commission and Bond for Raymond G. Pavers, employed by the A.D.T. and ordered same placed on file. PETITION: STREET LIGHT ( INCREASE IN POWER ) A Petition filed by Mrs. Kathryn L. Blough, City Cler7�, for the installation of a brighter street light at Ford Street and Scenic Drive was submitted to the Board and referred to the Electrical Department for further investigation and recommendation. PETITION: STREET LIGHT A Petition for the installation of a street light at Scenic Drive in the 5000 block at site of easement was submitted by Councilman Muszynski and Mrs. Kathryn Blough, City Clerk. The Petition was referred to the Electrical Department for investigation and recommendation. STREET LIGHT OUTAGE REPORTS Street Light Outage Reports were accepted and ordered placed on file. WEIGHTS & MEASURES MONTHLY REPORT A Report for the month of January, 1966 by the Department of Weights & Measures was submitted and ordered placed on file. POLICE DEPARTMENT MONTHLY REPORT A Report for the month of January, 1966 from the Police Department was accepted and ordered placed on file. APPLICATIONS: POLICE DEPARTDENT The following applications for the Police Department were accepted and ordered placed on file: John Edward McCallister, John Jacob Dombrowski, Jr. and Larry Dean Vergon.
