HomeMy WebLinkAbout10/11/65 Board of Public Works MinutesOctober 11, 1965 A regular meeting of the Board of Public Safety was held on Monday, October �1, 1965 at 10:00 A.M. Messrs. James A. Bickel and Lloyd S. Taylor were present. Minutes of the last regular meeting were read and approved . No vouchers were. -.approved. or ordered paid to the various suppliers. BUILDING DEPARTMENT - SUB -STANDARD DIVISION ( HEARINGS ) Comes now Richard Liszewski, Director of the Sub -Standard Division and advises the Board that property located at 134 N. Olive Street, owned by Anderson Jones has not been brought up to Code as requested. Mr. Liszewski further stated that the yard is used as a parking place for old automobiles, that debris is on the front porch, that the rear of the house is in need of new siding and that shelving is stacked on the property. Mr. Jones appeared before the Board and informed the Board that the automobiles do not belong to him, but to his neighbors who park the cars in the yard. He advised the Board that he hesitated to tell his C-) neighbors to move the cars and thus cause neighborhood friction, but tJ stated that the Police would be advised to order the cars moved. He further stated that he had purchased_ the necessary materials for the repair of the siding and had engaged a contractor to clean up the place, as directed by the Sub -Standard Division. The shelving was stored on the premises as a temporary measure but would be moved to another location. He requested an extension of 30 days in order to complete the work he has started. Request granted and Mr. Liszewski was directed to check on the progress in 30 days. Mr. Liszewski submitted a progress report on property owned by Rev. Luther Turley, located at 505 E. Ohio Street. An inspection made on February g, 1965 showed that nothing had been done to bring property up to standard. Rev. Turley was requested to come before the -Board to show cause why the orders had been ignored. Photographs were submitted. Rev. Turley advised the Board that the house is now vacant and requested two weeks extension to make the repairs. Request granted. With reference to property located at 310=3102 E. Pennsylvania, the owner, Mr. Richard-Bartel,appeared before the Board and advised the Board that he was working on the house now and that before he starts work on the interior, the tenants will have to be given notice to move. In order to accomplish this, Mr. Bartel requested an extension of 30 days.. Request granted. Mr. Liszewski advised the Board that property owned by Clayton and Opal R06der, located at 410 E. Pennsylvania Avenue will be vacant. A request of 30 days extension before any further action is taken on this property was granted by the Board. Mr. Liszewski requested an extension of 30 days on property owned by John and Flora Belle Riddle, located at 509,21- E. Pennsylvania Avenue. Request granted. Mr. Liszewski advised the Board that bids were to have been opened on this date with reference to demolition of property located at 802 Sherman Avenue, but that the owner, Joseph Cherbo,is now repairing the property. A request that the bids be held in abeyance was granted by the Board. FIRE DEPARTMENT: ATTEND CONFERENCE FIRE CHIEF MCHENRY ) Permission was granted Fire Chief McHenry to attend the annual I.A.F.Cts 92nd Annual Conference in Miami, Florida from October 18 to October 21, 1965. FIRE DEPARTMENT: PROBATION REPORT ( J. BECKER ) Fire Chief McHenry reported to the Board that Fireman John Becker has now completed his six months probation period and that he has been found to be comprehending in his knowledge of fire fighting and equipment; that he has fine mental and physical qualities,;. In view of these facts, Chief McHenry recommended that Fireman John Becker be accepted for permanent membership on the South Bend Fire Department. Following this recommendation, the request was approved by the Board. CITY CO' OL R• REPOR SIGNUIZATION OF MYNI AT DONMOYER & IRVINGTOH The City Controller submitted a report with reference to the signalization of Miami at Donmoyer and Irvington. This matter was referred to the City Controller by the Board on August 9, 1965. The report was accepted and ordered placed on file. ELECTRICAL DEPARTMENT: REPORT - STREET LIGHTS ( HARTMAN BUILDERS ) A Report from the Electrical Department concerning a request for street lights submitted by Hartman Builders was submitted to the Board and taken under study. STREET 'LIGHT OUTAGE REPORTS Street Light Outage Reports were accepted and ordered placed on file. SPECIAL PONCE BOND A Special Police Bond for Russell Jester, employed by the LaSalle Hotel, was approved and ordered placed on file. BUILDING DEPARTMENT: MONTHLY REPORT A Report for the month of September, 1965 from the Building Department was accepted and ordered placed on file. There being no further business to come before the Board) the meeting was adjourned at 11*10 A.M.
