Joseph Markovich, Richard R. Strozewski, Charles R. Mahank and Ralph L. Bukowski having made applicat-.on to the Board of Public Works Safety for appointment to the South Bend Police Department and these applicants having passed all necessal-j.mental and physical examinations and having, been accepted by the Pension Board and having been recommended by the Police Chief; said men are hereby appointed to the Police Depart- ment, effective April 5, 1965. SPECIAL POLICE BONDS Special Police Bonds for Allen E. Kester, Radio and Television Distributing Co., and Bud McGee, employed by Walter W. BECKER JR John Merland Becker, Jr., having heretofore filed his application with the Board of Public Safety for appointment on the South Bend Fire Department and he having been heretofore approved by the Board of Public Safety on the 10th day of August, 19641 subject to approval of his physical condition by the physician examiner for the South Bend Fire Department Pension Board and the Chief of the Fire Department having this date informed the Board that the applicant has passed such physical examinations on March 31, 1965, John Mlerland Becker, Jr. is hereby appointed to the Fire Department, effective April 1, 1965. REPORTS, PHYSICAL CONDITION OF FIREMEN VAN WIELE AND CUNNINGHP11 ( FIRE CHIEF Fire Chief McHenry submitted written reports to the Board concerning the physical e andition of Lt. Oscar Van Wiele and Fireman John E. Cunningham. Both of these men are ill and both are still under the care of physicnans. The 30 day sick leave allowed per year has also expired. Chief i.1cHenry requested a ruling on the disposition of these cases. After reviewing the -reports, the Board directed that the following memorandum be sent to the Fire Chief: Botch of the above -named firemen having exhausted their sick leave and being incapacitated for duty on the South Bend Fire Department, you have no choice other than to remove them from the payroll and either recommend that their physical examinations show them as disabled or carry them ex officio until such time as they are able to perform their duties on the Fire Department. 1 -I M, FIRE DEPARTT-ENIT: ATTEND ARSON INVESTIGATORS SMUNAR Following the recommendation of the Fire Chief, the Board approved the request of the Fire Chief to send Captain Jack Bukowski and Lt. Anthony Romeo to A= Arbor, Michigan to attend the Arson Investigators Seminar from April 12 through April 16, 1965. BUILDING DEPARTIE NT: HOUSE MTOVEP Comes now Forrest hest, Building Commissioner, and requests permission to have a house moved from, 913 S. 26th Street to 235 S. Logan Street. The house is owned ITj iris tschelen and the mover is T'.1r; J. I'litschelen. Since 1,1r. Mlitschelen oin-is the adjoining lots, there were no remonstrators to the move. The Board, having been informed by lb% West that all conditions in connection with such a house move have been met, now approved the house move as outlined in the request. BUILDING. MCI REPORTS: TRAFFIC DIRECTOR SIGNALS AT MISHAWAKA & LOGAN - TR. SIGN AT CQ9_A_X & SCOTT-TAYLOR Clem Hazinski, Traffic Director, submitted his recommendations and reports on the following requests that had been referred to him for investigation and recommendation: 1. Request from Councilman Szymkowiak for a traffic (stop) sign on Colfax at Scott Street and Taylor Street for the greater safety of school children crossing at these intersections was investigated by Hazinski 'uho reported that installation of additional stop signs are not warranted at this locationP and that these installations would cause rear end collisions on Colfax Avenue. The line of visibility will be increased at each intersection and signs cautioning motorists of the presenceofchildren will also be made. 2. Request of Ijb% C. Duewaine Hawblitzel that the visibility of the signal at Mishawaka Avenue and Logan Street be improved was investigated by, Ur. Hazinski who reported that the condition has now been corrected. The signal case sections at thesouthirtiest corner of the intersection has been ordered replaced with a newer type with longer visors over the lenses to further increase visibility. This work i1rill be completed this week. The Board, having studied the reports submitted by Mr. Hazinski, approved the solutions to the above problems as recommended by Mir. Hazinski. STREET LIM OUTAGE, REPORTS Street Light Outage Reports were accepted and ordered placed an file. There being no further business to come before the Board, the meeting was adjourned at 10:50 A.M.
