HomeMy WebLinkAbout05/24/07 Board of Public Safety Minutes - Special MtgM ~~~~ EXECUTIVE SESSION MAY 24, 2007 The Board of Public Safety met in the Executive Session at 9:00 a.m. on Thursday, May 24, 2007, with Board President Jesusa Rodriguez and Board Members Juanita Dempsey, and Patrick Cottrell present. Board Members Bruce BonDurant and Donald Alford were absent. Also present were Mayor Stephen Luecke, Fire Chief Howard Buchanon and Board Attorney Thomas Bodnar. The meeting was held in the Fire Department Conference Room, South Bend Fire ' Department, 1222 South Michigan Street, South Bend, Indiana, for the purposes specified in I.C. 5-14-1.5-6.1 (b) (2) (B) and (b) (ti) (B) and adjourned at 9:12 a.m. SPECIAL MEETING MAY 24, 2007 A special meeting of the Board of Public Safety was convened at 9:18 a.m. on Thursday, May 24, 2007 at the South Bend Fire Department, Classroom 1, 1222 South Michigan Street, South Bend, Indiana, by Board President Jesusa Rodriguez. Board Members Juanita Dempsey, and Patrick Cottrell were present. Board Members Bruce BonDurant and Donald Alford were absent. Also present were Mayor Stephen Luecke, Board Attorney Thomas Bodnar and Fire Chief Howard Buchanon. FIRE DEPARTMENT SWEARING IN OF FIREFIGHTERS Troy Williamson Jason Mappes Joshua Schoenthaler Grant Baker Jared Pearish Anthony Marvel Jason Kratzer Joshua Richhart Shawn Kuminecz Brandon Roark In a letter to the Board, Chief Howard Buchanon, recommended that Troy Williamson, ' Joshua Schoenthaler, Jared Pearish, Jason Kratzer, Shawn Kuminecz, Jason Mappes, Grant Baker, Anthony Marvel, Joshua Richhart, and Brandon Roark be accepted for employment on a probationary basis with the South Bend Fire Department effective May 24, 2007. They have met the requirements of the application process of the South Bend Fire Department. Upon a motion made by Mr. Cottrell, seconded by Ms. Dempsey and carried, the recommendation was approved. Mr. John Voorde, City Clerk, administered the Oath of Office to the above listed individuals. Mayor Luecke and Chief Buchanon pinned the badges on the new firefighters. The Board wished them well in their endeavors with the South Bend Fire Department. ACCEPT AND APPROVE PROMOTION - RANDY NEWMAN President Rodriguez advised that Chief Buchanon has submitted to the Board a recommendation that Engineer Randy Newman be promoted to the rank of Captain in Fire Suppression, effective May 24, 2007. He has been with the Fire Department since May 10, 1989 and is a member of the Fast Team, Confined Space and Hazmat. Upon a motion made by Mr. Cottrell, seconded by Ms. Dempsey and carried, the promotion was accepted and approved. ACCEPT AND APPROVE PROMOTION -CHRIS BAKER President Rodriguez advised that Chief Buchanon has submitted to the Board a ' recommendation that Engineer Chris Baker be promoted to the rank of Captain in Fire Suppression, effective May 24, 2007. He has been with the Fire Department since October 24, 1997 and is a Paramedic, a Diver and a member of the Fast Team. Upon a motion made by Mr. Cottrell, seconded by Ms. Dempsey and carried, the promotion was accepted and approved. ACCEPT AND APPROVE PROMOTION -TOM MOGERMAN President Rodriguez advised that Chief Buchanon has submitted to the Board a recommendation that Pump Engineer Tom Mogerman be promoted to the rank of Captain in Fire Suppression, effective May 24, 2007. He has been with the Fire Department since .} 'SPECIAL MEETING MAY 24, 2007 March 20, 1997 and is a Paramedic, and a member of the Fast Team. Upon a motion made by Mr. Cottrell, seconded by Ms. Dempsey and carried, the promotion was accepted and approved. ACCEPT AND APPROVE PROMOTION -TODD SKWARCAN President Rodriguez advised that Chief Buchanon has submitted to the Board a recommendation that Lieutenant Todd Skwarcan be promoted to the rank of Captain/Paramedic in Emergency Medical Service, effective May 24, 2007. He has been ' with the Fire Department since March 16, 1994 and is a member of the Fast Team and Confined Space. He is also a Paramedic and has proven his leadership skills and ability in EMS. Upon a motion made by Mr. Cottrell, seconded by Ms. Dempsey and carried, the promotion was accepted and approved. President Rodriguez congratulated the newly appointed Captains and wished them well on behalf of the Board of Safety.
