HomeMy WebLinkAbout05/16/07 Board of Public Safety Minuteso~~ 1 1 PUBLIC AGENDA SESSION MAY 16, 2007 The Board of Public Safety met in the Public Agenda Session at 8:00 a.m. on Wednesday, May 16, 2007 with President Jesusa Rodriguez, Board Members Juanita Dempsey, Donald Alford, Patrick D. Cottrell and Bruce J. BonDurant present. Also present were Police Division Chief Darryl Boykins, Fire Chief Howazd Buchanon and Board Attorney Thomas Bodnar. The meeting was held in the Board of Public Works Meeting Room, 13~n Floor, County City Building, South Bend, Indiana. Board members discussed the following item(s) from that list: - Promotions -Fire Department Mr. Bodnaz stated that the promotions were all Mayor and Fire Chief Appointees and the Board was not required to take action on them. He noted that the Board was only recognizing the promotions. Martin, Clerk EXECUTIVE SESSION MAY 16, 2007 The Board of Public Safety met in the Executive Session on Wednesday, May 16, 2007, at 8:07 a.m. The meeting was held in the Legal Department Conference Room,14th Floor, County City Building, South Bend, Indiana, for the purposes specified in I.C. 5-14-1.5-6.1 (b) (2) (B) and (b) (6) (A). ' President Jesusa Rodriguez and Board Members Juanita Dempsey, Donald Alford, Bruce J. BonDurant and Patrick Cottrell were present. Also present were Police Division Chief Darryl Boykins, Fire Chief Howazd Buchanon and Board Attorney Thomas Bodnaz. Board members did not discuss any subject matter other than the subject matter as specified in the Public Notice. BonDurant, Member REGULAR MEETING MAY 16, 2007 The Board of Public Safety met in the regular meeting at 9:17 a.m, on Wednesday, May 16, 2007, with President Jesusa Rodriguez and Board Members Juanita Dempsey, Donald Alford, Bruce J. BonDurant and Patrick D. Cottrell present. Also present were Mayor Stephen Luecke, Police Division Chief Darryl Boykins, Fire Chief Howard Buchanon and Board Attorney Thomas Bodnar. The meeting was held in the Common Council Chambers, 4`h Floor, County-City Building, South Bend, Indiana. , APPROVE MINUTES OF PREVIOUS MEETINGS President Rodriguez advised that if there were no objections by members of the Board, the minutes of the Public Agenda Session, Executive Session, and Regular meetings of the Board held on April 25, 2007 would be accepted as presented. There being no further discussion, the minutes were accepted. FIRE DEPARTMENT FILING OF MONTHLY STATISTICAL REPORT -APRIL 2007 Chief Howard Buchanon submitted to the Board the monthly report for the month of Apri12007 compiled by the Prevention/InspectionBureau ofthe Fire Department. The Statistical Analysis was accepted and filed. A summary is as follows: APRIL APRIL 2006 2007 STRUCTURE FIRES Properly Damage--Buildings & Contents (Estimates) $595,000.00 $1,394,100.00 INSPECTIONS (Fire Prevention/Ins ection Bureau) 402 Inspections 361 Inspections 27 Re-Ins ections 81 Re-Ins ections INVESTIGATIONS (Police/Fire Arson Bureau 20 25 Investi ations Investi ations 9 13 Arson Arson 1 o~ REGULAR MEETING MAY 16, 2007 ACCEPT ADMINISTRATIVE PROMOTIONS Mayor Steve Luecke congratulated the six (6) new appointees and stated that these were all administrative positions appointed by the Mayor and Fire Chief Buchanon. He noted that the Board of Safety was just recognizing the appointments. Mayor Luecke commended former Fire Chief Luther Taylor for developing such a fine staff, and Chief Buchanon for continuing the tradition. . Chief Howard Buchanon introduced his administrative staff and asked the new appointees to step forward. The following appointees were recognized: ACCEPT PROMOTION -ROBERT SANDERS Chief Buchanon advised that Mayor Steve Luecke has approved the recommendation that Battalion Chief Robert Sanders be promoted to the rank of Assistant Chief of Fire Prevention/Inspection, effective May 16, 2007. He has been with the Fire Department since September 20, 1977 and Battalion Chief since September of 1994. ACCEPT PROMOTION -NICK TEKLER Chief Buchanon advised that Mayor Steve Luecke has approved the recommendation that Captain Nick Tekler be promoted to the rank of Battalion Chief, effective May 16, 2007. He has been with the Fire Department since March 25, 1998 and a Captain since 2002. ACCEPT PROMOTION -CARL BUCHANON Chief Buchanon advised that Mayor Steve Luecke has approved the recommendation that Captain Carl Buchanon be promoted to the rank of Battalion Chief, effective May 16, 2007. He has been with the Fire Department since November 19, 1986 and a Captain since 1991. ACCEPT PROMOTION - MARK NOWICKI Chief Buchanon advised that Mayor Steve Luecke has approved the recommendation that Battalion Chief Mark Nowicki be promoted to the rank of Assistant Chief of Services, effective July 9, 2007. ' He has been with the Fire Department since November 27, 1979 and a Battalion Chief of Training since 1984. ACCEPT PROMOTION -STEVE COX Chief Buchanon advised that Mayor Steve Luecke has approved the recommendation that Lieutenant Paramedic Steve Cox be promoted to the rank of Assistant Chief of Emergency Medical Services, effective July 9, 2007. He has been with the Fire Department since March 24, 1993 and a Captain since 2003. ACCEPT PROMOTION -JOHN CORTHIER Chief Buchanon advised that Mayor Steve Luecke has approved the recommendation that Captain John Corthier be promoted to the rank of Battalion Chief of Training Bureau, effective July 9, 2007. He has been with the Fire Department since July 17, 1979 and a Captain since 2002. Chief Buchanon pinned the badges on the new appointees. President Rodriguez congratulated the new appointees on behalf of the Board of Safety.
