RESOLUTION N0. 919 -81 <br />A RESOLUTION OF THE COMMON COUNCIL OF THE CITY <br />OF SOUTH BEND, INDIANA, CONGRATULATING THE AFL - <br />CIO AND THE ST. JOSEPH COUNTY AFL -CIO COUNCIL ON <br />THE MANY YEARS OF PROGRESS IT HAS ACHIEVED AND <br />RECOGNIZES NOVEMBER 15, 1981 AS ITS 100th ANNIVERSARY <br />WHEREAS, November 15, 1981, marks the 100th anniversary of <br />the founding of the Federation of Organized Trades and Labor Unions, <br />which evolved into the American Federation of Labor and Congress of <br />Industrial Organizations (AFL -CIO), and inaugurated the establishment <br />of the mondern American trade union movement, and <br />WHEREAS, since that time trade unions have played an increas- <br />ingly effective part in winning for their members the right to <br />decent wages, safe and healthful working conditions, and dignified <br />enjoyment of their leisure time and retirement years, and <br />WHEREAS, America's local communities have benefited directly <br />from the activities of AFL -CIO trade unions, both on behalf of their <br />members and in the championing of the rights and progress of all <br />Americans, and <br />WHEREAS, the trade union movement is an effective and accepted <br />part of our local social and economic fabric, providing for stability <br />and progress through its continuing contributions toward. the advance- <br />ment of job opportunities to all who wish to work, and <br />WHEREAS, trade unions are in the forefront of the battles to <br />eliminate discrimination, to improve the quality of community life, <br />and to open new opportunities for individual advancement, on behalf <br />of those who often have no other effective champion, and <br />Whereas, the continued existence of strong and effective trade <br />unions among us is a measure of the place they have won in the basic <br />fabric of our society, to be cherished and fostered as a matter of <br />civic pride; <br />NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED by the Common Council of the <br />City of South Bend, Indiana, as follows: <br />SECTION I. The Common Council of the City of South Bend, <br />Indiana, hereby congratulates the AFL -CIO and the St. Joseph County <br />AFL -CIO Council on the century of progress it has achieved, and joins <br />in commemorating Labor's Centennial. <br />SECTION II.
