South Bend Redevelopment Commission
Regular Meeting -May 1, 2009
6. NEW BUSINESS (CONT.)
G. Ratification of Temporary Use Agreements
continued...
located across the street at the property that is the
Bendix Family Physicians office.
Mr. Inks noted that since the property is a dirt lot,
the Commission would need to put crushed stone
down to make it more suitable for the use. The
cost of crushed stone would be $3,000 to $5,000.
The Department of Public Works would provide
the labor at no cost. That cost is less than the
$60,000 it would cost to put down top soil and
seeding it, plus mowing. Staff recommends
approving the use by Urban Garden Market and
putting down stone as a temporary surface.
Ms. Jones asked if the Commission-s other
demolition jobs don"t produce debris that could be
crushed for this use. Mr. Inks responded that staff
is checking into that.
Mr. Inks also noted that the Commission approved
use of a portion of the LaSalle Square property that
the Commission owns for a Community Garden
and at the same time authorized expenditure of
$2,000 for bringing water to the site. The contract
is with Sara Uzelac, the individual, not an entity.
Ms. Uzelac has personally covered the cost of
insurance as is required by our agreement, at a cost
of $ I ,600. She has asked that the Commission
consider picking up the monthly water charge for
the site. Staff has secured price estimates from the
Water Department and an estimate fi-om Purdue
Extension for the amount of water that would be
needed for the plot that is tilled. The estimate for
water for the summer is $150-$300. The cost of
the water tap was only $900 instead of $2,000, so
the total cost to the city will be under the original
$2,000 that was authorized. Staff recommends
approving the additional expense.
10
