RESOLUTION NO. f~.~ ~~~~ ~~ ~ ~~`'~ ....~~ <br />A RESOLUTION OF THE COMIVION COUNCII. OF THE CITY OF SOUTH BEND, IlVDIANA, <br />PUBLICLY HONORING WASHINGTON HIGH SCHOOL SENIOR SKYLAR DIGGINS FOR <br />EARNING THE MOST PRESTIGIOUS NATIONAL AWARD IN HIGH SCHOOL BASKETBALL, <br />THE NAISMITH TROPHY AND FOR EARNING MANY OTHER HONORS <br />~~, the Common Council of the City of South Bend, Indiana, is especially proud to-recognize that <br />Washington High School Senior, Skylar Diggins, a member of the 2008-2009 Washington High School Varsity <br />.~, :. - <br />Girls Basketball Team, has been chosen as the Naismith National High School Player of the Year; and <br />~G1, the Naismith Trophy was presented to Skylar at a banquet held in Atlanta, Georgia on March <br />23rd; with this honor being given annually to the top girl and boy high school players and coaches in the <br />country and is the most prestigious national award in high school basketball; and <br />~1i1, the Common Council further recognizes that Skylar Diggins, an exceptional student-athlete <br />both on and off the basketball court; is rated as the consensus #1 guard in the country; was selected to be a <br />member of the 2009 McDonald's All American Girls .Team and scored agame-high 18 poinfs for the East in the <br />8~` annual McDonald's All-American Game held in Coral Gables, Florida last week; is the 2009 Indianapolis <br />Star "Indiana Miss Basketball"; is the 2009 Gatorade National Player of the Year; was selected to be a member <br />of the fast-team AP All-State for the 3rd year in a row -being voting in by the most votes among the girls; and <br />~, the Common Council would especially-like to publicly recognize that as a member of the 26-1 <br />Washington High School Lady Panthers Basketball Team, Skylar Diggins, a 5-10 senior, averaged astate- <br />best 29 points, 6.3 rebounds, 6.2 assists, 5.4 steals and 2.2 blocked shots during her senior year; and finished her <br />high school career with 2,790 points, thud all-time in Indiana state history; and <br />~, Skylar Diggins maintains a 3.91 grade point average; is a member of the National Honor <br />Society; led the Washington Lady Panthers to a 102-7 mark in her high school basketball career, and plans to <br />major in Pre-Med at the University of Notre Dame and ultimately wants to become an orthopedic surgeon. <br />~Y~ ~ ~ ~C,~/.red, by the Common Council of South Bend, Indiana, as follows: <br />Section I. On behalf of all of the citizens of the City of South Bend, Indiana, the Common Council <br />congratulates SKYLAR DIGGINS, for winning the Naismith National High School Player of the Year; the <br />Gatorade National Player of the Year; the MaxPreps Girls Basketball Player of the Year and many other honors <br />during her senior year as a member of the 2008-2009 Washington Higlt School Varsity Girls Basketball Team. <br />Section II. The Common Council is especially impressed by how humble and gracious Skylar is, as <br />epitomized by her comment that "All of these awards I've received have been overwhelming. None of these <br />individual honors would have been possible without all of my teammates. I've played on great teams at <br />Washington and with great players. This is not about me...:' Skylar will go on to wear the No. 1 jersey this <br />June to lead Indiana against Kentucky in the All-Star series to be held in Indianapolis and in Louisville. <br />Section II. The South Bend Common Council believes .that the very talented and gifted SKYLAR <br />DIGGINS' great work ethic, discipline, and dedication to her studies and to basketball has enabled her to <br />become a role model on the national stage, and here in her hometown of South Bend. Skylar has brought the <br />highest of honors to herself, her mother Renee Scott, her stepfather Maurice Scott, her father Tige Diggins; her <br />many other family members and friends, Washington High School, and the South Bend Community School <br />Corporation. The residents of the City of South Bend, Indiana are counting the days until they can fill the Joyce <br />Center at the University of Notre and cheer for Skylar as a member of the ND Women's Basketball Team. <br />Section III .
