ARCHITECTURAL DESCRIPTION <br />This is a two and a half story American Four Square style house. It has a square plan <br />and a quarry face block foundation. The house boasts wood clapboard siding, a flare <br />belt course along the second floor, a rounded corner under the porch, shingled hipped <br />dormers, truncated pyramid roof, boxed eaves, simple frieze board and central <br />chimney. It also has a corner front porch with inset flat roof, wood balustrade, simple <br />architrave, elevated wood deck, block base, tapered box columns, clapboard wall and <br />concrete steps. The house has one over one double hung windows through out the <br />first and second stories and sixteen over one double hung windows in the dormers, all <br />with wood surrounds and caps. It also contains a hexagonal oriel window with molded <br />entablature on the west facade and a full glazed wood entry door and an eight <br />mullioned wood storm door on the front facade. <br />RECOMMENDATION <br />Based on the Historic Preservation Commission's Local Landmark Criteria's adopted <br />by the Common Council, the building at 1818 Lincolnway West has been <br />recommended to the Common Council for designation as a Local Landmark by <br />Historic Preservation Commission. <br />The building meets the criteria in at least three areas: <br />1.) Its embodiment of elements of architectural design, detail, materials, or <br />craftsmanship which represents an architectural characteristic or innovation. <br />2.) Its suitability for preservation. <br />3.) Its identification with the life of a person of historical significance. <br />The building fulfills criteria #1 as an excellent example of a turn of the century <br />American Four Square style residential structure. The building is rated a significant <br />eleven in the Indiana Historic Sites and Structures Inventory. <br />The building fulfills criteria #2 by the integrity of its original construction with virtually no <br />changes to the facade in over 90 years. Its a wonderful and unique example of the <br />many variations individuals used when designing an American Four Square house. <br />The building fulfills criteria #3 by its association with Francis Alward, a prominent figure <br />in local politics. <br />Staff finds that the building meets the criteria for designation as a Local Landmark and <br />recommends that the Commission send such a recommendation to the Common Council. <br />X <br />
