RESOLUTION NO. 3 7 5 7- 0 7
A RESOLUTION OF THE COMMON COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF SOUTH BEND,
INDIANA, PUBLICLY COMMENDING, HONORING AND REMEMBERING FOREVER
OUR FRIEND, COLLEAGUE AND EXEMPLARY PUBLIC SERVANT, ROLAND KELLY,
3RD DISTRICT COUNCIL MEMBER OF THE SOUTH BEND COMMON COUNCIL
°~~, the Common Council of the City of South Bend, Indiana, recently bid farewell to its trusted
friend, colleague, mentor, story-teller and "Dean of the Council", Roland Kelly, who was in his 16`~ year of
faithfully serving the residents and businesses of the 3`d Councilmanic District, along with Roland's family
members and many, many friends and business associates; and
°~~, the South Bend Common Council flourished under Roland's leadership when he guided the
Council as its President in 1996, 1997 and 2002 as he skillfully and gracefully promoted innovative concepts,
programs and initiatives which always had the best interests of South Bend at heart; and
°~,~, Roland's ready smile and his steadfast love of family, service to the South Bend community and
his indelible Fighting Irish spirit, inspired so many others to commit themselves to the highest levels of
integrity, respect and service, so that the South Bend and Notre Dame communities would be enriched; and
°1~,~, Roland Kelly epitomized the very best of a generation who selflessly served our country in the
armed forces during World War II; who, after graduating from the University of Notre Dame in 1950 made
South Bend his home, where he would raise his family with his fun-loving wife, Joyce; where he was regularly
invited into countless homes for more than twenty-one (21) years as a news anchor and News Director at WSBT
and brilliantly reported the news based on his fact-finding interviews with Presidents of the United States,
University Presidents, Governors, Senators, Congressmen, and especially the every day person; and
°~~, words cannot captured the amount of love, respect, and admiration which we have for Roland
Kelly and his entire family-Laurie & Rick, Randy & Jory, Jason & Kara; Rick, Katie, Pat, Breanna, Maeve,
Jayne, Eavan and Max; who we know through Roland's many stories about family events and the family
pictures which he proudly shared of their special times together in South Bend, in Minnesota; in Illinois; and
especially those special times involving his beloved Notre Dame, which made him forever young in spirit.
South Bend and the University of Notre Dame du Lac.
Section II. The South Bend Common Council hereby designates the week of August 27, 2007, when the
University of Notre Dame hosts the Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets at ND's I sc home football game of the 2007
