South Bend Redevelopment Commission
Regular Meeting -March 6, 2009
6. NEW BUSINESS (CONT.)
D. Airport Economic Development Area
(1) Discussion of New Tech High School.
cost to startup because the New Tech
Foundation charges for the training they do
for the teachers and for working with local
staff on the curriculum. The school
corporation hasn't raised money yet. They
need to secure this commitment for a
building before they can start making
presentations for other public support. If
they can't get it going for August 2009,
they'll work toward August 2010. It"s a fine
project for students and the community.
Mr. Kapsa noted that one reason for wanting
to begin this year is that one individual has
pledged $450,000 toward the project if it
starts this year. Another individual has
pledged $150,000 toward the project. Those
commitments are being used for matches as
they apply for a grant from the Lilly
Foundation.
Mr. Alford expressed his enthusiasm for the
project. He asked what criteria would be
used to select the 100 students for this year.
Mr. Kapsa responded that it is not a gifted
and talented program. They will take
applications from anyone in the community,
but will be looking for students who can
work independently. New Tech High School
will not have all the programs that are
available at the other high schools, so there
will be some trade-offs for those who attend
there.
Ms. Jones asked if the criteria would be
similar to that for LaSalle Academy.
