It is described as being the East 1/2 of lot
34 Hendricks and Grants Addition.
Lot 34 Hendricks U Grant's Addition was sold to Samuel Barnes, a carpenter, in 1873
for $900.00. In 1916 Herman Schuell hired
prominent architects, Austin and Shambleau, to renovate the house. Austin and
Shambleau added elements of Greek Revival Style to up date an other wise simple
vernacular style house. Mrs. Schuell continued to reside there until 1949 when she sold
the house to her daughter, Kathryn and her husband Forrest West. Mrs. Schuell moved
to Minnesota where she passed away in 1951. Mr. West was a prominent South Bend
architect with his own firm, Forrest R. West Architect.
