RESOLUTION NO. <br />A RESOLUTION OF THE COMMON COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF SOUTH <br />BEND, INDIANA, PLEDGING ITS SUPPORT TO THE SOUTH SHORE LINE <br />6% the South Shore Line is an electrically powered inter -urban commuter rail line <br />operated by the Northern Indiana Commuter Transportation District (NICTD) and; <br />CAC.ui, the South Shore runs between the South Bend International Airport and <br />Millennium station in downtown Chicago, and <br />6ACm,,, the original line was built between 1901 to 1908 and; <br />6,yi,,,m, in 2009 replacement of all catenary began between Michigan City and Gary at a <br />cost of over 18 million dollars and since 2010 new wires have been strung at an additional cost <br />and; <br />in 2005 NICTD announced express service between South Bend and Chicago for <br />a total travel time of 1 hour and 55 minutes that being more than 20 minutes faster and; <br />6)fi, over 12,000 passengers use the South Shore line daily for commuting to work, <br />entertainment venues and to travel see friends and relatives. <br />11 11 11 <br />Section I. The South Bend Common Council urges all Federal, State, and Local public <br />officials in Northern Indiana to be proactive so that the South Shore line, which is a vital interurban <br />commuter service, will not be shut down on January 1, 2016. <br />Section II. The NICTD has made a good faith effort to install a mandated wireless <br />communication safety system originally estimated to cost 43 million dollars and now estimated to <br />cost over 120 million dollars. <br />Section III.
