wOUTN s� <br />0i <br />J' <br />RESOLUTION NO. <br />/ wv • JOAN �_ <br />roc <br />•� CORPS COMMU MITT C[NTE A_ <br />I I ^ d a <br />S o u t h 6 e ^ d am <br />A RESOLUTION OF THE COMMON COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF SOUTH BEND, INDIANA, <br />PUBLICLY HONORING AND COMMENDING THE SALVATION ARMY RAY AND JOAN KROC <br />CORPS COMMUNITY CENTER FOR SPONSORING ANOTHER VERY SUCCESSFUL <br />RED KETTLE CAMPAIGN WHICH CONTINUES TO BENEFIT MANY IN OUR COMMUNITY <br />6 a,m, the South Bend Common Council notes that the Salvation Army Red Kettle Campaign began in <br />San Francisco in 1891 "when a young captain in The Salvation Army named Joseph McFee placed a large pot <br />and a sign that read `Keep the Pot Boiling' on a ferry dock and asked passersby to help keep the pot boiling for <br />those in need by making a donation "; and <br />G, the Salvation Army used the money donated in 1891 to buy Christmas dinners for the homeless, <br />with the kettle becoming "a symbol of help and hope at Christmas time all around the globe "; and <br />CAI 125 years since the first kettle was placed on a California ferry dock, a countless number of <br />individuals have donated their time to ring a bell by a Salvation Anny red kettle for those in need; and <br />6f, from November 9"' through Christmas Eve, December 24, 2015, the Salvation Army Red Kettle <br />Campaign was launched by the Ray & Joan Kroc Corps Community Center at sites throughout the community. <br />Over 500 volunteers helped carry out the 2015 Red Kettle Campaign as bell- ringers, sorting and distributing gifts, <br />working at the Angel Tree booth, and helping reach the goal of $110,000 in red kettle donations to help address <br />the needs of approximately 900 low- income families throughout St. Joseph County; and <br />G, the Mayors' Ring -Off Challenge, also known as "Giving Tuesday ", was held on December 1, <br />2015, for the Yd consecutive year of friendly competition for bragging rights between South Bend Mayor Pete <br />Buttigieg and Mishawaka Mayor Dave Wood. Mayor Pete won for the 1St time, raising over $2,900 with Police <br />Chief Scott Ruszkowski and Assistant Fire Chief Jim Lopez; and Police Chief Ken Witlowski and Fire Chief <br />Dale Freeman volunteered with Mishawaka Mayor Dave Wood. <br />Section I. The Common Council of the City of South Bend, Indiana, proudly recognizes the Salvation Army <br />Ray and Joan Kroc Corps Community Center on another very successful 2015 Red Kettle Campaign which <br />benefits so individuals and families in need throughout South Bend and the St. Joseph County. <br />Section II. The Common Council publicly thanks all of those involved at so many levels at the Salvation Army <br />Ray and Joan Kroc Corps Community Center for engaging so many very dedicated volunteers from all walks <br />of life, to volunteer their time so that others in need are not forgotten.
