aoum st; <br /> RESOLUTION NO. Q erl J ) <br /> A RESOLUTION OF THE COMMON COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF SOUTH BEND,INDIANA PUBLICLY <br /> THANKING HENRY DAVIS,JR. FOR TWO <br /> 4-YEAR TERMS OF PUBLIC SERVICE AS THE 2ND DISTRICT COUNCIL MEMBER <br /> G following his graduation from LaSalle High School, Henry Davis, Jr., this LaSalle Lion went on <br /> to earn a Bachelor of Arts degree from Earlham College, where he majored in fine arts and the classics. After <br /> marrying, Henry and his wife, Viressa, chose to raise their family in South Bend; and <br /> eliiatts, in 2007, South Bend-born Henry Davis, Jr., defeated the 12-year incumbent 2"d District Council <br /> Member in the City Primary where he focused on "encouraging citizen participation [and] demanding <br /> transparency in our local government", as well as "...empowering the economically disadvantaged". He ran <br /> unopposed in the General Election that year; won a contested City Primary and was re-elected without opposition <br /> in the Fall of 2011 for his 2nd 4-year term as the 2"d District Council Member; and <br /> Gj during his years in the city legislative branch, Council Member Davis was very vocal in stressing <br /> the"need to work more aggressively to recruit employers and remain in communication with national companies <br /> that have operations in South Bend"; he voiced the need "to grow for-profit businesses, especially in the 2nd <br /> District with the availability of good jobs helping to solve other problems such as crime and vacant housing"; and <br /> Gam, some of the legislative initiatives which Council Member Davis sponsored or co-sponsored over <br /> the years addressed improving zoning regulations addressing used car operations; adding requirements on vacant <br /> & abandoned buildings, downspouts; MBE/WBE; proposing urban chicken regulations, CNG regulations, <br /> riverfront development district liquor licensing, whistleblower protection for City workers; resolutions calling <br /> for Martin Luther King, Jr. Day to be a City holiday, urging the South Bend Community School Corporation <br /> Board of Trustees not to lower standards of student-athletes who wish to participate in interscholastic athletics; <br /> urging a public/private partnership for the Potawatomi Zoo; supporting the Violence Against Women's Act, <br /> supporting the MDA Muscle Walk, supporting raising fair minimum wages, honored Bobbie Magley, Seabe <br /> Gavin, Angel Hernandez, Heroes Camp, Mamas Against Violence, South Bend Senior League Girls' Softball <br /> team, declared Child Abuse Prevention Month; as well as countless 2"d District Special Proclamations; & many <br /> news releases addressing concerns such as Beck's Lake Site being added to the National Superfund Priorities <br /> List, lobbied for new park equipment at Kennedy Park&honorary street name changes for Pastor Dave Davis & <br /> Al Carothers, founded"Hair Kutz 4 Kids', &participated on several City negotiating teams—just to name a few. <br /> 2i«a', Mygres IearaIn*die z tilivametwieNiamgiend fhaen, aflame: <br /> Section I. The Common Council of the City of South Bend, Indiana, thanks Henry Davis, Jr. for his eight (8) <br /> years of public service as the 2nd District Council Member representing the residents and businesses of that District <br /> from 2008 through 2015, where he also became known for"ruffling a few feathers while doing his job". <br /> Section II. The Common Council sincerely wishes Henry, his wife Viressa, and their son, HD III, all the best in <br /> the years ahead, as they continue to live and enjoy the many venues which South Bend has to offer. <br /> ection III.
