RESOLUTION NO. I I(I - f Y <br /> A RESOLUTION OF THE COMMON COUNCIL OF THE <br /> CITY OF SOUTH BEND, INDIANA, URGING VARIOUS <br /> INDIANA STATE OFFICIALS TO RECONSIDER FUNDING <br /> ACTION, INC. <br /> WHEREAS , in 1965 ACTION, INC. was established as a not-for-profit <br /> agency to help eliminate the causes and effects of poverty in the South <br /> Bend area. <br /> WHEREAS, in 1966 ACTION, INC. assisted in establishing various <br /> neighborhood centers and in 1968 was designated by the City as the <br /> community action agency to administer anti-proverty programs of the Equal <br /> Opportunity Act. <br /> WHEREAS, ACTION, INC. has received Community Development funding <br /> over the years which has assisted it in developing many, programs to <br /> assist lower income people. <br /> WHEREAS , some of the areas in which ACTION, INC. has been instrumental <br /> include : "Project Safe" , weatherization programs, operating various <br /> neighborhood centers , administering a food and nutrition program which <br /> included canning, and assisted in various child day-care programs. <br /> WHEREAS, thousands of individuals have benefited from the programs <br /> of ACTION, INC. , which has been located at 1820 South Michigan Street, <br /> South Bend, Indiana, for the past several years. <br /> WHEREAS, since ACTION, INC. received 95% of its funding from the <br /> State of Indiana, the State ' s decision to terminate funds on April 10, 1982 <br /> has severally hampered the activities which ACTION, INC. would like to <br /> carry out. <br /> NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, by the Common Council of the City <br /> of South Bend, Indiana as follows : <br /> SECTION I . The South Bend Common Council urges the various Indiana <br /> State Officials to reconsider its decision to terminate funding ACTION, INC. <br /> SECTION II . Since its creation in 1965, ACTION, INC. has sponsored <br /> programs to assist thousands of low income individuals of the South Bend <br /> area which have tried to eliminate the causes and effects of poverty <br /> and which have been fiscally responsible. <br /> SECTION III . The Council instructs the City Clerk to send a copy <br /> of this Resolution to: Governor Robert Orr, State Senator Douglas E. Hunt, <br /> State Senator Joseph C. Zakas, State Respresentatives B. Patrick Bauer, Thomas <br /> Kromkowski, and Lloyd Taylor; and Jean Merritt of the Indiana Department <br /> of Aging and Communnity Services. <br /> SECTION IV.
