RESOLUTION NO. 1389-86 <br /> RESOLUTION OF THE COMMON COUNCIL <br /> OF THE CITY OF SOUTH BEND, INDIANA, <br /> COMMENDING THE SOUTH BEND FIRE DEPARTMENT <br /> AND THE SOUTH BEND POLICE DEPARTMENT <br /> FOR THEIR PERFORMANCE IN CONTROLLING <br /> THE JANUARY 8 , 1986 , FIRE AT THE MAR MAIN ARMS <br /> AND THE JANUARY 10, 1986, FIRE AT ROBERTSON' S WAREHOUSE <br /> WHEREAS,. on January 8 , 1986, at 7 :42 p.m. , the South Bend <br /> Police Department Communication Center received notification of a fire <br /> at. Mar Main Arms apartment building ; and <br /> WHEREAS, the Mar Main Arms apartment building serves as <br /> residence for more than 100 residents, the majority of whom are <br /> elderly; and <br /> WHEREAS, the lives and property of the residents of Mar Main <br /> Arms were in jeopardy as a result of the fire; and <br /> WHEREAS, in spite of extreme weather conditions , members of <br /> the South Bend Fire Department and the South Bend Police Department <br /> through their immediate response and unstinting efforts and without <br /> concern for their own personal safety, evacuated the building , brought <br /> the fire under control, prevented loss of life and minimized damages to <br /> the building and its contents ; and <br /> WHEREAS, the South Bend Common Council wishes to commend Fire <br /> Chief Luther Taylor, the Assistant Chiefs and the individual Firemen <br /> who responded to the Mar Main alarm along with Chief Charles Hurley, <br /> the Assistant Chiefs, the sworn police personnel who responded to the <br /> Mar Main alarm and the personnnel of the South Bend Police Department <br /> Communication Center who handle the dispatch duties; and <br /> WHEREAS, on January 10, 1986 , at 6 :03 a.m. the South Bend <br /> Police Department Communication Center received notification of a fire <br /> at Robertson' s Warehouse building ; and <br /> WHEREAS, the Robertson' s Warehouse fire was an extra alarm <br /> fire which threatened to destroy the entire building which is a part of <br /> the East Race Redevelopment area; and <br /> WHEREAS, both the South Bend Fire Department and the South <br /> Bend Police Department once more performed valiantly in spite of <br /> inclement weather and early morning traffic in order to provide for <br /> public safety , contain the fire and minimize damage to the property; <br /> and <br /> WHEREAS, the South Bend Common Council wishes to commend Fire <br /> Chief Luther Taylor and Police Chief Charles Hurley, their Assistant <br /> Chiefs and the individual members of the Fire and Police Departments <br /> for their performances at the Robertson' s Warehouse fire. <br /> NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED by the Common Council of the <br /> City of South Bend , Indiana, as follows : <br /> Section I. The Common Council of the City of South Bend , <br /> Indiana, hereby publicly commends Fire Chief Luther Taylor and Police <br /> Chief Charles Hurley along with all members of their departments whose <br /> response and efforts help to avert potential disaster at the Mar Main <br /> Arms apartment building and to avoid the total destruction of property <br /> at the Robertson' s Warehouse building . <br />
