HIM AN HONORARY CITIZEN <br /> OF SOUTH BEND , INDIANA <br /> • <br /> WHEREAS , the Common Council recalls that during World War II , <br /> the United States had no diplomatic relations with the country of <br /> Hungary ; and <br /> WHEREAS , in 1944 the United States Government through <br /> Secretary of State Cordell Hull: requested the cooperation of <br /> Sweden , as a neutral nation , in protecting the lives of Hungarian <br /> Jews facing extermination at the hands of the Nazis and <br /> WHEREAS , Raoul Wallenberg agreed to act at the behest of the <br /> United States in Hungary and went 1-o Hungary in the summer of 1944 <br /> as Secretary to the Swedish Legation : <br /> WHEREAS , Raoul Wallenberg , with extraordinary courage and <br /> with total disregard for the constant: danger to himself , saved the <br /> lives of almost one hundred thousand innocent men , women and <br /> children : <br /> WHEREAS , Raoul "allenherg , with funds and directives supplied <br /> by the ignited States , provided food , shelter , and medical care to <br /> those whom he had rescued . <br /> WHEREAS , on January 17 , 1945 , the Soviet Union seized Raoul <br /> Wallenberg in violation of his Swedish diplomatic immunity and <br /> international law ; and <br /> WHEREAS , it is believed that Raoul Wallenberg is still being <br /> held as a prisoner in the Soviet Union today ; and <br /> WHEREAS , the Senate and the House of Representatives of the <br /> United States proclaimed Raoul Wallenberg an honorary citizen of <br /> the United States of America in 1921 . <br /> NOW , THEREFORE , BE IT ORDAINED by the Common Council of the <br /> City of South rend , Indiana , as follows : <br /> SECTION I . On behalf of all of the citizens of the City of <br /> South Bend , Indiana , the Common Council hereby publicly commends <br /> Raoul Wallenberg for his uncommon valor and extraordinary courage <br /> and dedication in protecting and saving the lives of thousands of <br /> innocent Hungarian Jews during World War TT . <br /> SECTION II . The Common Council proudly designates Raoul <br /> Wallenberg as an honorary citizen of South Rend , Indiana , and <br /> encourages all of our citizens to rededicate themselves to the <br /> high ideals and goals to which Raoul. Wallenberg dedicated himself <br /> on behalf of the United States of America . <br />
