RESOLUTION NO. 1.5-.A0 -5(7 <br /> A RESOLUTION OF THE COMMON COUNCIL <br /> OF THE CITY OF SOUTH BEND, INDIANA, <br /> RECOMMENDING THAT A COUNTY-WIDE <br /> WOMEN' S COMMISSION BE ESTABLISHED <br /> BY THE ST. JOSEPH COUNTY COUNCIL <br /> WHEREAS , various members of the Common Council have been <br /> apprised by the Working Women's Coalition of the growing economic <br /> hardships facing today ' s women ; and <br /> WHEREAS , according to the U.S. Department of Commerce , <br /> Bureau of Census, one-third (1/3) of all female headed households <br /> are living below the poverty line and two (2) out of three (3) <br /> adults in poverty are women; <br /> WHEREAS, it has been estimated that women workers in the <br /> Michiana area earn fifty-four cents ($.54) for every dollar <br /> earned by a man whereas the national figure is sixty-five cents <br /> ($ . 65) ; and <br /> WHEREAS, a county-wide commission could be established to <br /> address such items as wage and salary inequities; inadequate <br /> child care facilities ; inadequate housing, health care , job <br /> training and educational opportunities and to monitor progress in <br /> each of these areas . <br /> NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED by the Common Council of the <br /> City of South Bend, Indiana, as follows: <br /> SECTION I. The Common Council of the City of South Bend, <br /> Indiana is aware of the growing concerns facing women in the <br /> Michiana area. <br /> SECTION II. The Council believes that a county-wide <br /> commission which would address such items as wage and salary <br /> inequities, inadequate child care facilities, inadequate housing, <br /> health care, job training, and educational opportunities would be <br /> in the best interests of the community. <br /> SECTION III. The Council recommends that the St. Joseph <br /> County Council consider establishing a "County Women 's <br /> Commission" and pledges its support to the County Council in such <br /> an endeavor . <br /> SECTION IV.
