The <br />skill sets they need are very "hands on.*' <br />Also, with traditional schools like Ivy Tech, <br />there are barriers such as needing a GED. At <br />the Apprentice Academy that is not a <br />requirement. When a person has had a hard <br />life, but wants to pick himself up and make <br />something of himself, these barriers to <br />starting are too much of a hurdle. The <br />Apprentice Academy allows a person to start <br />seeing progress and later go back and till in <br />the gaps such as a GED. <br />Mr. Downes asked how soon the first <br />participants might be placed into a job. Mr. <br />Summers responded probably 90 days. <br />Mr. Downes asked when Project Impact <br />would begin. Mr. Summers responded the <br />first of the year, 2009. They have already <br />identified some individuals in the area that <br />should be good candidates. <br />Mr. Downes asked how many employers <br />have been identified to participate. Mr. Hartz <br />responded that the Airport Industrial Park has <br />mostly aerospace and medical <br />manufacturing. Those types of <br />manufacturing are experiencing double digit <br />growth and expect that to continue. <br />Mr. Summers pointed out that Project <br />Impact's participants will be willing to start <br />out at a lower salary and work into earning <br />traditional salaries for this type of <br />employment. <br />17 <br />
