COMMUNITY RELATIONS JULY 27, 2015 5:40 PM
Committee Members Present: Karen White, Valerie Schey, Gavin Ferlic, Derek Dieter (XAB)
Citizen Members Present: Gavin Seabe (AB)
Other Council Present: Tim Scott, Henry Davis, Dr. Fred Ferlic, Dr. David Varner,
Oliver Davis (XAB)
Others Present: Bob Emery, Brian Pawlowski, Kathy Cekanski - Farrand
Agenda: Bill No. 15 -74 Recommend the SBCSC Board of Trustees not to
lower the Standards for Student - Athletes
Participating in interscholastic Athletics
Karen White, Chair of the Community Relations Committee called the meeting to order for the purpose
of considering bill 15 -74. This was a resolution recommending the South Bend Community School
Corporation not lower the standards of student - athletes participating in interscholastic athletics.
The SBCSC has proposed to lower the grade point standard for student - athletes so long as they are
tutored and are showing improvement.
The Council resolution advocates that there be much more discussion allowing enhanced public input.
This collaboration, and outreach would foster a greater degree of transparency.
Councilmembers Henry Davis, Valerie Schey and Derek Dieter were co- sponsors of the bill. Henry made
the presentation suggesting that lowering the "bar" was a disservice to both the individual student -
athlete and the entire community.
General discussion followed most of which voiced opposition to lowering academic standards.
Ultimately Valerie Schey moved for a favorable recommendation. Karen White seconded the motion.
There were no nays.
Karen White adjourned the meeting at 5:55 PM.
Respectfully Submitted,lj
Vu
Karen L. White, Chairperson
Community Relations
