SPECIAI, MEETING JULY 2.2015 51 <br />The Board of Public Safety met in a Special Meeting at 9:05 a.m. on Thursday, July 2, 2015, with <br />Board President John Collins and Board Members Eddie Miller, Luther Taylor, and Daniel Jones <br />present. Also present were Fire Chief Stephen Cox, Mayor Peter Buttigieg, and Attorney Jessica <br />Brock. The meeting was held in the CPAT Building, Luther J. Taylor Sr. Fire Safety Training <br />Center, 710 E. Sample St., South Bend, Indiana. <br />FIRE DEPARTMENT <br />APPROVE HIRING AND SWEARING IN OF PROBATIONARY FIREFIGHTERS <br />- JONATHAN KNEPP <br />-MELISSA CLARK o <br />- ERIN TIBBS <br />In a letter to the Board, Fire Chief Stephen Cox recommended that the above listed individuals be <br />accepted for employment on a probationary basis with the South Bend Fire Department. In his letter <br />to the Board, Chief Cox stated they have met the requirements of the application process of the <br />South Bend Fire Department and completed a twenty (20) week recruit academy, successfully <br />obtaining the required certifications including Firefighter 1 and 2 and EMT. Upon a motion made by <br />Mr. Jones, seconded by Mr. Taylor and carded, the recommendation was approved. <br />Assistant Chief John Cortier welcomed everyone and noted there would be two (2) ceremonies <br />today; the LaPorte Fire Department's training academy graduates and South Bend's recruits. <br />Fire Chief Stephen Cox welcomed everyone and congratulated the recruits on the success at their <br />rigorous training. He stated they all have a responsibility that is just beginning today, adding it is <br />important that they maintain their current level of confidence, and it's important that they form a <br />bond with their fellow officers to keep each other safe. Chief Cox noted they will be seen as role <br />models in the community they will be out in daily, and will take care of people in the worst of <br />situations. He thanked the family members for their support in this difficult career. <br />Mayor Pete Buttigieg thanked Chief Cox and his crew for the terrific work they do. He added he is <br />delighted by this partnership with the LaPorte Fire Department, noting there is talk about partnering <br />a lot, but this is a chance to do it. Mayor Buttigieg congratulated the new Firefighters on their <br />success on their very intense training. He stated every one of them is going to be a representative of <br />the City, but they are one of the few that wear the logo of the City on their sleeves. He congratulated <br />and thanked the family members and friends of the new firefighters and noted they also serve the <br />community with the support they give. <br />Mr. John Voorde, City Clerk, was present and administered the Oath of Office to the above listed <br />individuals.
