RESOLUTION NO. 2121 -94 <br />A RESOLUTION OF THE COMMON COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF SOUTH BEND, <br />INDIANA, COMMENDING CAPTAIN DAVID YODER AND SENIOR <br />ENGINEER RONALD SIMONS OF THE SOUTH BEND FIRE DEPARTMENT <br />FOR THEIR HEROIC PUBLIC SAFETY ACTIONS. <br />Mbereas, the Common Council of the City of South Bend, Indiana, recognizes that members of <br />the South Bend Fire Department are dedicated to providing quality public service for all of our City <br />residents; and <br />1Uberea8; the Council recognizes that firefighters are trained to react in emergency situations to <br />provide the best possible service; and <br />Ubereas; on April 8, 1994, two (2) members of the South Bend Fire Department were called <br />upon to provide services to a distraught individual who was attempting to commit suicide by jumping into <br />the St. Joseph River•, and <br />1Ubereas; Captain David Yoder and Senior Engineer Ronald Simons rescued the individual just <br />before he would have gone over the dam behind Century Center; and <br />Mbereas; these two (2) dedicated paramedics and firefighters performed heroic actions against <br />treacherous water and swift currents; and <br />1Ubere0s, in the words of Battalion Chief Michael Wegenka of the Divers' Rescue "They got to <br />him a few feet from the edge of the dam. The Common Council of the City of South Bend, hereby publicly commends, <br />on behalf of all the residents of the City of South Bend, the following individuals of the South Bend Fire <br />Department for their heroic public safety actions performed on April 8, 1994: <br />Captain David Yoder <br />Senior Engineer Ronald Simons. <br />J+eeti0u II. The South Bend Common Council commends both of these dedicated firefighters <br />for their heroic deeds and tenacity for successfully rescuing a distraught individual from the swift currents of <br />the St. Joseph River. <br />9590ion III. The Common Council believes that Captain Yoder and Senior Engineer Simons <br />are just two (2) of the many individuals of the South Bend Fire Department who are true role models for the <br />youth and citizens of our community. <br />fbectiOn IV.
