This bill would require each citizen to have a
municipal photo ID. There are some similar practices found across the country. The ID's could provide
the holder with an improved access to a full range of benefits and would provide city officials a more
accurate census county when applying for state and federal funds tied to population counts.
After some roundtable discussion among councilmembers who wondered everything from the nuts and
bolts of ID issuance,to costs of implementation,to privacy issues,to acceptance by the business
community, it was unanimously felt more discussion was needed to answer the above questions and
many more. Valerie Schey wondered whether requiring an ID would impose a greater sense of
vulnerability to illegals in the area. Corporation Council Cristal Brisco spoke briefly on "a spotlight issue"
which requires the proposed regulations to be broad based to the entire community and not to a
specific segment.
Karen White who was chairing the joint committee discussion said would begin a series of discussions
with input from the entire community beginning with an evening meeting during the 3rd week of May.
On motions from Gavin Ferlic and Valerie Schey, supported by all the bill was continued indefinitely.
Karen adjourned the meeting at 5:29 p.m.
1
