HEALTH & PUBLIC SAFETY FEBRUARY 23, 2015 4:28 P.M.
Committee Members Present: Derek Dieter, Dr. Fred Ferlic, Karen White, Valerie Schey
Citizen Members Present: Vacant
Other Council Present: Tim Scott, Henry Davis, Dr. David Varner, Oliver Davis (AB),
Gavin Ferlic
Others Present: Janet Cadotte, Kathy Cekanski- Farrand, Kathryn Roos
Agenda: Update on Healthcare Clinic for City Employees
Health & Public Safety Committee Chair Derek Dieter called the meeting to order to have Janet Cadotte,
the Human Resources Director for the city, provide an update on the health care clinic initiative the city
intends to provide for its employees.
Janet described the benefits of having a clinic which would include better care at lower cost to the city
and to employees. She went on to describe the RFQ process which winnowed the providers down to
two. Ultimately a company called Activate was chosen for their broad experience and proven track
record. Janet thanked Dr. Fred Ferlic for his counsel during the selection process. She said Activate was
currently providing clinic care for the South Bend School Corporation as well as over 100 other
employees. Janet added that overall health care costs to the city for its employees would go down by
approximately $800,000 in the first 18 months of operation.
During the Council questions portion of the meeting Henry Davis expressed concern for costs being
passed on to employees.
Tim Scott applauded the decision and suggested the clinic be located in a central convenient location.
Karen White also called for the clinic to be in a convenient location.
This Council was told the clinic wherever it is should be up and running by October 151.
Derek adjourned the meeting at 4:540 P.M.
Za
Derek Dieter, Chairperson
Health & Public Safety Committee
