RESOLUTION NO. 3 ~ $~ - ~ <br />A RESOLUTION OF THE COMMON COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF SOUTH BEND, INDIANA, <br />PUBLICLY COMMEMORATING THE LIFE OF FORMER WASHINGTON HIGH SCHOOL <br />HEAD FOOTBALL COACH THE LATE GEORGE BASKER <br />~~f~eaa, the City of South Bend lost a true high school football coach legend when <br />former Washington High School Head Football Coach George Basker past away last December at <br />the age of 96; and <br />~~eaa, the Common Council recognizes that George Basker was born in South Bend on <br />April 19, 1910, attended South Bend Central where he was 3`d team All-State half-back in his <br />sophomore year; 2"d team All-State half-back in his junior year, and 1St team All-State half-back in <br />his senior year when he graduated in 1931 and was named the "Outstanding Bruin Player of the <br />Year"; and <br />G~1~~, George Basker lettered in football all four years while studying at Purdue <br />University where he wore # 88 as a Boilermaker half-back and is listed in. the 1943 edition of <br />"Who's Who in Polish America" and the 2003 edition of Purdue Football History; <br />~~~eaa, George Basker was an Assistant Football Coach at Washington High School from <br />1936-1942; became the Panthers Head Football Coach in 1943; received "All City" Coaching <br />honors from 1943-1947; was present when the Panthers received "threadbare Notre Dame hand-me- <br />down gear in `the Dungeon"' who is recalled for his light-hearted personality which inspired "the <br />resilient determination that defined Washington football for a generation or more. <br />c~~, c-1,~~, ~ ~t~ooG,.ed, by the Common Council of the City of South Bend, Indiana, <br />as follows: <br />Section I. On behalf of all of the citizens of the City of South Bend, Indiana, the Common <br />Council hereby publicly commemorates and celebrates the life of the late George Basker for a rich <br />life of teaching young men both on and off the field whose impact will long be remembered for <br />generations to come. <br />Section II. The South Bend Common Council believes that the rich and lasting legacy left <br />by the late George Basker will continue to enrich our community as we reflect upon the many <br />contributions made by Coach Basker who went on after a brilliant career at Washington High <br />School to be the Head Football Coach at Evansville Memorial between 1948 & 1953; & later <br />became the Assistant Coach at Niles High School from 1953 -1963. <br />Section III. The Common Council wishes the family, friends, former players, coaches and <br />managers who had the privileged of knowing Coach George Basker to carry on with the <br />determination and "scrappy ambition" instilled by Coach Basker who will always be known as the <br />"soul of Washington High School football" and the truest of "loyal Panthers". <br />Sect' IV .
