614 Sherman <br />Historical Context <br />This property is located on the east side of Sherman Avenue, the first house north <br />of Lincolnway West, in South Bend, Indiana. It is described as being lot 3 of Cushing's <br />First Addition to South Bend. <br />In 1915 Robert and Ida Greening purchased the lot from Joseph and Matilda <br />Micholson. They immediately hired Austin and Shambleau to design this Prairie Style <br />house which was completed in 1916. <br />Mr. Greening owned his own business at 1019 Lincolnway West, selling and <br />contracting wall paper, paints, painting and decorating. <br />Robert SZ Ida Greening sold the house to Louis 8L Exa Greening on July 12, <br />1949. Exa Greening and Betty Ann Daugherty purchased it on November 25, 1952. <br />The house was then re-sold to Exa Greening - Bolard on October 26, 1954. Another <br />sale on November 27, 1956 placed the house in the ownership of Harold and Donald <br />Meadow, who then sold it to Lloyd and Dorothy Stites on June 12, 1961. Dorothy <br />Stites sold it to David Babbitt on February 16, 1996 and he then sold the house to Rosa <br />Gonzalez on January 28, 1999. <br />ARCH ITECTII RAL DESCRIPTION <br />This is a two story Prairie Style house with a stone foundation and chimney. The <br />roof is hipped with a front central dormer, wide soffit overhangs and is covered with <br />asphalt shingles. The first story walls are clapboard up to a band course which divides <br />the fist and second floors, above which is wood shingle siding. The house boasts a full <br />width front porch with a hipped roof, stone rubble pier supports and rail, concrete floor, <br />flat arch wood lintel and concrete steps. The house also has a side entrance that is <br />accessed by concrete steps and metal rail. The windows are one over one double hung <br />with simple hoods and aluminum storms. The side door is of the modern metal variety <br />with a single small diamond window at the top.
